Government womans woman's Conference held recently in Vernal at the Elks Elk's Lodge The conference appropriately appropriately appropriately ap ap- ap- ap using Changing Role as its theme centered around creating an awareness of how women's roles have changed The conference conference con con- ference Terence programs presented to the one hundred people in attendance attendance attendance at at- what opportunities are now available to women and what must be done by women in indecision indecision indecision decision making goal setting and career planning in order to achieve what they want in life With the increase in opportunities opportunities op op- for women to move into managerial positions in their jobs and be becoming codling community leaders there are many changes in attitudes for both men and women and r ew challenges to meet The con- con fr nce also strove to help those in attendance deal with the problems that may arise as asa asa asa a result in the changing roles for women Opening remarks by Robert Rowen Forest Supervisor Ashley National Forest and Lloyd Ferguson Vernal District Manager Bureau of Land Management indicated that men and people in supervisory positions were beginning to view the women's role in business and society as being a positive step forward ROWEN STATED Role changes for women in society is inevitable and the best thing managers can do is to help it and direct it The role changes are going to benefit management as it gives managers more people to toch ch choose ose from Ferguson stated that in his position hes looking inking for the most qualified competent individual who will get the job done disregarding the fact if that person is male or female Introduction of the Keynote Speaker brought Doris Denis Taggart Vice President in charge of Public Relations for Zions First National Bank based in Ogden to the podium with an especially perceptive view of the role changes women women are undergoing and have undergone during her 40 years in the business world Since beginning work for a week in a newspaper where she did everything except scrub the floors to her current position she has seen role changes and exclaims the changes are very good however she cautioned not to attempt jo fo o strive to be the boss unless one is qualified and well- well trained SHE SIZE FURTHER cautioned that women are our own worst enemies She called for a unification of support for women in order for opportunities opportunities opportunities op op- op- op to remain open and not be closed in the future She cited statistics of a state survey survey conducted three years ago in which 94 percent of the women surveyed stated they would not work for a woman Stating that women often hold other women back from advancing advancing advancing ad ad- she asked the group to ask themselves three questions before beginning to complain when a woman is promoted ov over them 1 AmI willing t b to work as hard as she does 2 Am AmI f I 1 willing t to furU further r my my education 3 Am I willing to work that time over to get ahead Bonnie Whalen Regional Federal Women's Program Coordinator Intermountain Region US U.S. Forest Service in succeeding Mrs Taggart reiterated reiterated reiterated re re- re- re iterated the need for the support of women during this period of role changing and the necessity for women to gain education and experience in order to become qualified for higher positions Education doesn't apply to just business related areas She stated its it's important that women be tuned into outside influences and laws that affect women women and their societal roles IN EXPLAINING the need for the establishment of the Federal Women's Program she stated the program insures equal treatment and opportunities op op- op- op Through Affirmative Affirmative Affirmative Af Af- Af- Af Action planning equal treatment and are adhered to in addition addition addi addi- tion to providing a law for agencies agencies agencies agen agen- cies to uphold and the explanation tion of women's needs in the plan Basically the program results in providing a sense of unity Through this type of unity women can develop the ri right t type of attitude that will enable them to strive for higher and higher goals rather than be satisfied with what they've got Beverly Evans Chairperson of the Business Department at atthe atthe atthe the Uintah Area Basin Vocational Center spoke of the career potentials for women and the fact that economic reasons are causing many women to enter the job market She states the majority of the women work because they have to She spoke of advancement possibilities for women and the fact that attitudes play playa a large part in the women's advance advance- ment Many self-defeatists self make it easy for supervisors to pass them over To negate the possibility that a person will be passed over its it's imperative that characteristics such as self-confidence self and assertiveness be exhibited as aswell aswell aswell well as being able to take the initiative In order to progress up the ladder of success success and achieve personal goals a person must be beable able to explore th themselves re-evaluate re themselves and take action if necessary obtain the training for the job wanted be able to job hop if necessary be able to take the final step for forthe forthe forthe the goal and learn how to be a good leader FILLING IN FOR Fon Attorney John Clark of the Governors Governor's Commission on the Status of Women was Brenda Hancock of the same office who spoke of various roles the commission has undertaken and tasks per per- formed Through the work of subcommittees subcommittees subcommittees sub sub- committees citizen projects include education and counseling counseling counseling coun coun- employment and economic status child development legislation and family life She informed the group they wouldn't see immediate resu results ts of what the conference was trying to accomplish She stated this is in the beginning process and the next generation will have the various options the present day women are striving for lor Whenever she gets frustrated and down I Mrs Hancock looks toward Suzanna S unna Grua former lormer Vernal r resident and currently living in Salt Lake for Inspiration Mrs Grua Grus has worked for lor women's issues for 50 years and has been a great Inspiration for me and provides hope such as the hope that Is going to come out of this conference The audience was treated to a presentation by Marilynne Glatfelter counselor at Utah State Stale University as she spoke on Becoming More Assertive Assertive Assertive Asser Asser- tive She stated staled the most common behavior when a person is feeling insecure or not okay in a situation is to either take flight or stay and fight She views assertion as being in between these two and very definitely a skill which has to be learned She cautioned the group to learn the skill of being assertive a little at a time in order to minimize the falls that will occur Take little risks initially so falls are easier she said And learn by the mistakes ASSERTIVE people learn to protect their own rights beliefs opinions and feelings she stated staled The most common mistake people make when learning the skill Is to become aggressive rather than assertive Many people erroneously equate te the two Aggressive ve people unlike assertive people tend lend to violate other peoples people's beliefs opinions and feelings when presenting their own Assertive people are only interested In protecting their own while Insuring they dont don't violate others The conclusion of the conference conference con con- ference Terence had Wayne Shepherd Director of Public Safety University of Utah give a presentation of Self Defense for Women Throughout his presentation Shepherd demonstrated various techniques for women to enable them in getting out of trouble Next years year's conference
