has recently begun the Uintah County History Program We Weare Weare Weare are off to a good start starl The Uintah County has a rich vivid history that thai is rivaled but bul certainly unmatched by any other county in Utah Where else in the state stale are there such combinations as Indians and pioneers outlaws and lawmen fur trappers and traders the sheep cattle and agricultural industries the development of valuable oilfields oil oilfields oilfields fields and mineral resources unique geologic features and Dinosaur National Monument With such a varied past it is hard not to take pride in our cultural heritage Ironically though Uintah County is probably the least known in the entire state of Utah Ulah In spite spile of the magnitude and extent of our past here in inthe Inthe inthe the area we are in danger of losing a large part of it It is easy to take our local history for granted For example we may assume that tha t many of the small incidents personal stories legends etc that our parents and grandparents told us are common knowledge and wont won't be forgotten In many cases this isn't true Perhaps only afew afew a afew few people know these things and then they pass away move or just forget Consequently this valuable part of our heritage is lost forever Of course there are depositories of records that are kept the courthouse records old newspaper school records museum collections etc elc These sources are good because they document facts about aboul our past Yet they do not always preserve the fullness and richness of human experience and the excitement of being alive and living in this area The result is th that t we have small isolated isola ted pockets of history in the form of memories Part of the program here at atthe atthe the Center is to preserve these experiences The process is quite simple One of the Centers Center's Centers Center's Centers Center's Cen Cen- ter's interviewers will go to lo a ahome ahome ahome home and tape record a con sc much easier just to talk about those incidents and then receive a neatly typed copy of them This not only helps help to meet the obligation of writing a personal history but serves the community
