Measles leads the list with a total of 16 new cases. Poliomye-litis came second with 15 and LOCALNOTES No. 1 Fire hall was the scene Monday evening of a lovely early fall party when the No. 1 Fir Ladies entertained the No. 2 Fire Ladies. Bridge was played with prizes awarded to Mrs. Mar-tin Prigmore, first; Mrs. Leon-ard L. Miller, second; Mrs. Hos-m- er Petersen, house and Mrs. Hugo Bianchi, bingo. BY HELEN HALE A METHOD which is generally safe as well as successful for removing oil and grease spots from the basement floor, espe-cially when they're fresh, uses dry Portland cement for covering. Let remain for several hours and the cement will absorb the oil. Knotty pine, when finished prop-erly, improves with age. A tawny finish is achieved by applying a light oak stain, followed with a v thin coat of beige paint while it's still wet. When the wood is dry, finish In the usual way with wax, rubbed well. ;TJse soap and water to clean the garden hose, as dirt will deterio-rate the rubber. If stubborn spots , remain, sponge with dry cleaning fluid and wipe dry. ' White lead paint Is good for coating top and bottom edges of storm doors. If left unprotected by paint, moisture will rot the wood. Make certain the paint is dry be-fore hanging the doors. RECIPE OF THE WEEK Cheese Meringue Potatoes (Serves 6) 4 tablespoons butter or sub-stitute 3 cups mashed potatoes 2 eggs, separated lVi teaspoons salt teaspoon pepper Paprika y cup hot milk Vt cup grated processed cheese Add butter, egg yolks, salt and pepper to potatoes. Add milk and beat well. Pile into but-tered baking dish and cover with meringue made by beating egg whites stiff and folding in cheese. Sprinkle with paprika. Bake in a moderately hot (375 F.) oven for about 10 minutes. Adhesive paste is used tor gluing plastic base floor tiles. Have all surplus paste work out after lay-ing and wipe off paste as it's more difficult to remove once It dries. If it has dried, use alcohol or some floor cleaner. If you have copper accessories, . make them shine and gleam with the following treatment: dissolve ordinary table salt in vinegar, let-ting the fluid take as much salt as possible. Rub copper pieces with j this mixture and buff with a dry cloth. If garden furnishings have rust spots on them, rub with oil and let stand overnight. Wipe off oil, then rub down the spots with sand-paper, emery cloth or steel wool. |
