Show ngung oung calves made good gains on corn com silage silage bange alien wh en fed to calves less leas than three or four months old produced good gains economically with no bad physical effects in n test made during the past winter at tile tho iowa experiment station five jersey and four guernsey calves averaging nt at the start about fifty days of age were divided into three groups before the trial they received whole milk skim milk grain and albala hay jay after being divided into groups they aliey were continued for eight days on part whole milk and then changed wholly to salm ahlm milk A grain amin mixture consisting of three parts parta comment three parts ground oats ants two parts bran and one part was hand fed timothy tiny hay salt and water was available tit at all times ench each group was foil fed silage for a 40 day period in addition to tile the regular ration ond anil then sliced roots replaced the silage for n 40 day aty period still a third 40 day period was ifred u sed in which the calves received only the timothy hay bay and grain ration slightly more diore than four pounds of corn silage a flay day was consumed by ench each calf during the sange feeding period the consumption of sliced beets ran pounds per calf per tiny day it was found that the silage or roots reduced tile the amount of hay eaten tin and that growth was more rapid other feed was required with the silage or roots and the gains were cheaper no scouring due to feeding occurred |
