Show AN INCENTIVE TO ACTION tile the news of the past week from salt lake included a story cf supreme importance to southern utah and particularly to these counties unties ca concerned in the uncompleted portions of the grand canyon highway it was the story dealing with the proposed a activities tivi ties of the grand canyon transportation company which announces a service to bo be inaugurated next spring between lund in iron county and the grand can canyon yon in arizona this news is important first as a complete exposure of the mitt hold held by the salt lake route and second as a direct call to action on the part of those interested in the state skate highway north of cedar city it precludes any further uncertainty as to the full extent of the salt lake routes interest in good roads in southern utah and makes it il evident that the people north of the middle of iron county must exert themselves to the utmost to be anywhere in the running next summer we have known for a long time that the railroad has coveted an outlet to the grand canyon to grab some of that cream that has enriched the coffers of the santa fe since grand canyon traffic began we have also known that the salt lake route officials have been directly behind much of the pressure that has ha brought action on the part of thu the state in the good roads work already accomplished in iron washington and kane counties we also feel safe in asserting that this influence will continue to be exerted to secure a splendid highway from lund through cedar city and on to the south As to that portion of the state highway north of cedar city the railroad does docs not and never did care a tinkers cuss although we of beaver would naturally prefer to have the grand canyon traffic of the railroad come through milford and beaver and thence south to cedar city we can have no legitimate quarrel with the situation as it confronts us today it is probably a logical and strictly busi business situation and although it has some drawbacks it has many advantages that will work to our credit As far as railroad influence goes it has secured results to the south of us and will continue to get them thus far has the whole highway been benefited As directly behind the promotion of travel to tile the grand canyon tile the railroad must ever be watchful as to the condition of tile road in iron washington and IC kane a ne counties this again will be to the credit of the whole being the direct sponsor of the grand canyon transportation company the railroad must assume the great burden of advertising tho the beauties cs of that southern trip that is where we of the northern part of the highway will directly benefit for we will catch all tile the traffic drawn by that advertising which ases not travel in railroad cars with our part of the road finished we cm cin say me ale too and add that the automobile trip from salt lake south is one of tile the best ever next year will be a banner year in transcontinental motor travel and with the grand canyon properly exploited a very great percentage of this travel can be diverted south along our grand canyon highway we must be in shape for it using every effort to complete those portions of the road which are not yet yat in shape for travel beaver countes Coun tys portion is almost ready and beaver county is to be congratulated out of 32 miles mile of the highway in this county 24 are now non ready with the completion of 11 miles this fall there is no question but that beaver will complete her eight miles by spring approximately 20 miles remain uncompleted in juab 40 miles in millard and 20 in it iton iron on every effort should be made by these counties to got get in line either by special levy as beaver did or by some form of regular subscription or donation of labor the moans means used dont matter its the highway we want the counties along aloia this highway are entitled to a commissioner each sonic some of these have not been appointed which is a delay and neglect not in keeping with the spirit of the highway these highway commissioners are supposed to meet with the state road commission and devise ways and means for future action they should be on the job right now for this highway business needs action now and needs plenty |
