Show BEAR LAKE LETTER politics in spite of the becent manifesto in bear laka stake of zion EDITOR joun NAL the farmers of bear lake county have not yet been able up to this date to put in their chops as it has been raiding and snowing for nearly four weeks ever day with the exception of two days no gardens have been planted and it has been one of ho moet backward springs in the memory of the early settlers of this county but it makes no difference as far ahmud is concerned how much snow or rain hail or sunshine to the republicans of bear lake county they have held their primaries and elected their delegates to attend the county convention to select their delegates to the state convention at pocatello Poc on the lath dinst to elect delegates to the national convention at st louis to nominate a president mckinley without a doubty it is strange to look over the list of delegates or some of them that were elected to the county calven tion on saturday last which convened at and although stake conference was in session at paris and apostles john henry smith and F M lyman were at the quarterly conference it did not prevent president wm budge bishop robert price counselor walter J U president of the high council and stake tithing clerk alfred budge counselor to young mens mutual improvement associations of the bear lake stake and james nye counselor to bishop west of the paris first ward all going to the convention from paris some of them from montpelier were bishop W W dark and counselor F M winters john A bagley another counselor of young mens mutual of this stake mow the question is did they get permission to neglect conference to attend a political convention of the G 0 P the convention elected delegates as follows to pocatello to state convention ven tion walter bishops counselor A herman alf budge counselor john bagley counselor bishop W W dark G C patten lashbrook laker J A hume oliver Dur foid R S spence gus and the delegates were instructed to endorse president wm budge for one of the delegates to attend the convention at st louis considerable dissatisfaction is expressed in the ranks of the G 0 P among the gentile republicans as they think the church leaders in thia stake are trying to run the party and at any time you may hear a big split in their ranks john A bagley is candidate for delegate to congress on the republican ticket but it appears he was called down off his high horse by boss walter hoge who is now editor of the paris post a short time ago and hoge gave bagley to understand that president budge was candidate for the united states senate to succeed fred T dubois it is reported that baelen told that two years ago he was candidate for district attorney for this district and that hodge who is alf budges father in law president budge and J U begged bagley to withdraw his name and support alf budge and they prom abed him that any office in the future he wanted they would support him for BO with this understanding bagley withdrew and stumped for alfred in this district and alfred was elected but now Bag leya aspirations are again overshadowed by those of the budge family told bagley that it would not do for two bear lake cormons mormons to expect to go to washington one for the senate and the other for the house of representatives senta tives bagley and liis friends are feeling very aare over this change but what alie result will be time will only tell it is reported that president budge and J V mcconnell McCo nuell the present governor have entered into a combination to defeat fred T dubois and the combination is if president budge can develop more strength than mcconnell in the legislature then mcconnell will throw his strength to president budge and if mcconnells McCon nells strength is greater than that of president budge he will throw all the mormon vote to gov mcconnell anything to beat freddy another report is going the rounds here that freddy dubois is going to havo the support of hon georga Q cannon for the lal services he dubois has rendered to frank J cannon and if that is the case president budge will not be able to go into this combination with mccohnell Mc Counell as he will hardly get permission to take a peat in the united states senate hon george Q cannon has more influence in south eastern idaho than budge has the montpelier examiner has published a republican county ticket a follows state senator bishop V W dark of montpelier natives ta tives counselor walter hope and bishop arnos wright sheriff counselor arthur budge assessor oliver dinford of gingham treasurer bishop beck of banark lanark probate judge J A hulme of bloomington coroner bishop austin of liberty surveyor geo davis this ticket haa caused an uproar among the G 0 pg there is another report in circulation here which confirms the report of bishop amos wright as one of the representatives to the legislature the atory goes that president budge wrote to bishop wright a few days ago in to this matter and for the bishop to prepare himself to go to the legislature but the letter fell into the hands of one of the bis hopfl sons and of course the son gave the letter to his father and told him he opened it by mistake and the son told his father he was surprised at the contents in view of the new manifesto which had been read and voted upon a few days before at sunday meeting and approved now to see such a letter he was greatly surprised this made the bishop angry and he informed his son to keep this matter quiet and told him in the future to be more careful and not open his letter and so the matter dropped but it leaked out by some hook or crook this is a democratic county and the banner county of the state but tha party has taken no steps so far to call their convention to nominate delegate to the state convention to elect delegate to chicago but a call will soon be made and the party machinery will soon be put in working order the democrats and populists lists and silver party of the state will fuse and go in and organize a silver parly and will work under that banner and if all parties will work together the power will be taken from the grand old G 0 P in the state now the question is does the manifesto just read at the general conference at salt lake and read in every conference in utah and idaho affect the church leaders in bear lake stake of zion or have we in this stake got adother manifesto to apply to our church leaders heie ST may 10 |
