Show THE LINE LIME OF tim THE JOURNAL began its career as such under the auspices of the the journal publishing company on the first day of january 1892 every impartial subscriber will I 1 admit that as a newspaper it has given general satisfaction as a party organ it has tried to do its duty and as a paper of the people a as s a champion of their rights as a sentinel to warn them of en upon their liberties i THE JOURNAL has stood at its post in storm and sunshine winter and summer for more then four years I 1 it marked out a line of conduct I 1 in the beginning to which it has strictly adhered and still adheres this has been its motto TUB THE or OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS is HONEST is IN POLITICS AND THE PUBLIC declarations OF ITS PRESIDENT welte SINCERE THE JOURNAL his has stood upon that platform constantly and has maintained its truth consistently we defy any one to point out a word or line it has uttered to the contrary unreasonable men and papers may make bare assertions in contradiction but we challenge them to the proof whenever a man went out oat among the people and intimated mated that president woodruff desired the success of one party more than another THE JOURNAL denounced the insinuation as false whenever a man whispered about that the first Pre presidency y of the church as such was interested in the success of a particular candidate THE JOURNAL expressed its disbelief in emphatic terms whenever a man sent misleading letters to members or officers of the church intended to create the impression that the church authorities were working for a political party TUE JOURNAL JOURN ai charged the writer of such letters with deception whenever a man has carried politics into the pulpit or Triest priesthood hood meeting and sought to injure the candidates of a political party by so BO doing THE JOURNAL has taken him to task and it never made one bit of difference which political party these men belonged to or how high in social or religious circles they soared iNh whenever enever the conduct reflected upon the honesty of the people as a whole or upon the truth of president woodruffs public declarations THE JOURNAL stuck to its motto and camped upon the trail of all offenders it has been hewing to the line although the chips have fallen upon the heads of powerful and determined men it has incurred the every man who tried to make the people believe by hints winks and an pretended messages sa eb that president woodruff had to one thing for tho the public and another for private ears it has been abused by every ever subaltern who falsely claimed to talk with authority from the church in favor of some particular party or candidate trie JOURNAL has always maintained and still maintains that the church has no dictation or persuasion for its members as to which party they shall join or support if any one intimates to the contrary he is a deceiver if any one pretends that the church leaders desire that members shall be in a condition to be swayed to one side or the other as exigencies may der demand nand he is misrepresenting ing those leaders and inculcating a most dangerous and delusive doctrine lionor honor sincerity truth and righteousness are essentials in our re religion ligion and falsehood in politics is falsehood in faith alike detesta ble to god and to all honest men the deseret beperet news said that on the of 12 march larch 1892 it was endorsed by THE JOURNAL at the time and while the news has been far more lenient with deceivers and inculcator a of dangerous and delusive doctrine than it might have been while it has appeared to condone and cover up the offenses and shield the offenders yet we are of the opinion that the DESERET NEWS still aill believes its doctrine above quoted as firmly as THE JOURNAL believes it there is no jewel in journalism like consistency |
