Show WAS IT REVENGE A prominent citizen of tooele thoele charges it to lyman he believes that the manifesto recently issued was skillfully fully worded bordea to refute a patty party platform tooele thoele april 30 to the editor of the herald with your kind permission I 1 desire to explain my view of the manifesto and the result of its adoption the manifesto is so BO studiously and carefully worded that its generally accepted construction may be technically incorrect in no instance does the manifesto positively deny that high church officials as such used the rower POWER or OF THEIR POSITIONS IONS to influence men to adopt democratic or republican politics or instructed the people that it was the wish of tle the first presidency that so BO and so eo should advocate the re he publican pub licau or democratic cause but it says we declare that there has never been any attempt to curtail individual liberty at no time and under tinder no circumstances was any attempt made to say to voters how they should cast their ballots again we once more here repudiate the insinuations that there is or ever has been an attempt by our leading men to trespass upon the ground occupied by the state or that there has been or it is the wish to curtail in any manner any of its functions hence the authorities can truthfully technically techi cally say any charge that has been made to the contrary is false I 1 do not remember that a charge of that nature was ever made abre was and is no feces kyfor it ty f or the authorities to attempt to curtail individual liberty to attempt to say gay how bow voters shall ball cast their ballots for they know full well that when they can induce a democrat to adopt republican politics he is pretty sure to vote the republican ticket THEIR CAUSE IS WEAK indeed when they have to resort to such technical language the manifesto says the first presidency and other leading officers did make certain suggestions 0 to the people etc in order that the full betie benefit fit should not be lost which was hoped to result from this new political division now mr editor what was this full benefit that way was hoped to result from this division and which the bi high bih h officials were so BO desirous should not be loett lost an old saw says gays actions speak louder than words so in their actions THE KEY is I 1 many of actions were fully recited last fall in the reconvened convention and I 1 need not trespass upon your space with a recital of them now if the leading church officials are not guilty as charged by th the e democrats and again by the republicans why this unseemly haste in forcing the adoption of the mani festo feato upon the people and this inhuman and arbitrary manner of dealing with those who refuse to adopt it why this fierce denunciation of those who BETRAY THEIR BRETHREN 1 and why this exulting boasting that they have broken your heart mr editor if the charges against certain high church officials which were sustained by tho the democratic party last fall are not the ones referred to by the manifesto then why when mr de la mare stated in our quarterly conference to apostle lyman that if ho could have the opportunity be could satisfactorily prove that church influence had been used in politics and falling failing to do so eo he be would humble himself ask their forgive nein biot publicly and endorse the manifesto manifest ot did not apostle lyman correct tho the error if error there be and why does not the church explain the matter fully and satisfactorily and then give the people time to study the matter mat that the church rule promulgated ro U by the manifesto as boue touching in the a duties of high bi h church officials 0 bials I 1 is not dot the I 1 MILK IN THE COCOANUT COCO is by the remarks of apostle lyman when mr kr de la mare stated that he could adopt that rule heartily and cheerfully cheerful lv said 1 I WANT THE SAINTS TO understand THAT THEY M ENDORSE EVERY WORD AND SENTIMENT OP OF THIS MANIFESTO OR no NONE NL or OP IT kt AT ALL As to the position of those who oppose the manifesto the church officials say they must be wrong wrong for all the brethren are united 0 on H it and can it be that the judgment of one man or any single yet pet of men is superior to that of the majority history does not record one single I 1 gle instance wherein exi existing stin evils were sought to be reformer reform reformed eI that the he reformers were not right and IN THE MINORITY but assuming asaumi ng for arguments sake that the those se who oppose the manifesto are in the wrong are the authorities justified in dealing with them in this arbitrary and unwarranted manner I 1 think the officers can ill afford to be vindictive in this manner that a desire for revenge prompted the actions of apostle lyman on monday list last is conceded by three fourths of his audience the tender footed who are the tender footed it must mean all those who are opposed to adopting the manifesto mr ar editor the officers and the entire church have seen you in in your devotion to your co religion its and belief placed iu in such positions that your life hung bung as it were on a thread mr de la mare has likewise shown his COURAGE AND DEVOT DEVOTION IOlj to the cause of truth pa and thousands who have been dubbed ten derfert der feet who have been tested and have not been found wanting how was it when a little temporary confinement or a promise to obey the law confronted some of these same high church officials that they silently folded their tents and dropped into the underground I 1 I 1 wonder er who were tender footed then respectfully A J mccristion |
