racial rope iler her credit has bee been n exhausted and her funds with the ibe exception of a few waterworks water works dollars have 9 gone one where the woodbine gwineth tw ineth shortly after the knauff inauguration of mayor major maj or quayle and his republican council it was necessary to bend to I 1 new york certain bonds which had been sold at a very pod good figure by mayor plaines and the council elected by the peoples party parly those bonds called for fort forty y thousand dollars and were sold for the purpose of liquidating a certain floating indebtedness which existed before mayor II aines administration U t any bank in utah would have taken those bonds sent them east and secured the money for about three dollars but what did these republican officials do sent the bonds by express at an aa expense of seventy live five dollars had the money been returned by express it would have cost another seventy five but some good samaritan prevailed upon them to have tho the money modey returned through a local bank however Ilo wever they received this less leas tho the discount this much they cannot deny now noly we ire ask what have they done with it A portion they say was used to cancel other debts then what became of the balance vas it used for the purpose of giving 0 work to a favored few at the rate of two dollars for eight hours work per day or was it spent on street improvements prove ments in republican localities it is is a well known fact that local republican politicians promised durin during t the 11 e campaign campag n which led ell to the election of the present city officials that two dollars per day would lie ijo paid by them and that firlit 0 hours sh should constitute a wo working kino 0 lay day provi provided deil they were successful at the polls upon that promise to pay depended their r success with a certain class of voters i when therefore the present city administration beg began nan its rule it was met on oil every hand by tho the demand for light work and large pay pa Y as promised before election some found favor with the officials and were rewarded accordingly dut but a hundred doll dollars ars will not give employment to as many men at 2 per day ai it will at per day an and many were out of job so a club was waa formed a kind of administration anti republican i club compo composed eed of men who acre ere not taken into this 2 per day deal without pausing to dwell upon the history of that club or comment upon its untimely end it may be well to add that its leaders have since been in the steady employ of the city and that one of tile the favored few drives tile tho street I 1 I 1 supervisors team and wagon nor was that forty thousand dollars just referred to the oil only forty thousand that thai tile alic city lias has rai raised be d during 0 the present administration tra tion the second forty thousand was received by them last lart cintel wintel when tile city was bonded for waterworks water works this cannot af forn to have done but aside from questions of finance there lias has been a disposition on the part of some members of the city council to in berve their party pt it the expense of the public good these carried the campaign into their meetings and beh behaved avci as though they were a council not of the whole people but of tile republican party parly and they carried thin things 9 with a aich hand I 1 in n appointing a fire chief the city council i ignored 0 all precedent anil and disregard dis disregarded 0 ded a petition of tile the firemen by na naming irling a man mail who was not a i member of the company at all this taij caused a disbandment of the company and the organization OL of a now new one altogether 0 one of ol 01 the councilmen even insisted upon making it a partisan company out and out the purchase of a chemical engine by this aliis present city council was niada a bit of expensive folly ai aj inasmuch inasu in ell as the matter hall had been investigated vesti gated aed before and the minutes showed an all unfavorable depoi t upon the question of chemicals and the subsequent action of the mayor in trying to rescind the contract was ample evidence of the inefficiency of the toy they bought the mayor maor even telegraphed the olloway II Ir people that their engine bencine was not chat what the people of this eity city waited that it did not fill the bill yet the city council purchased that identical engine and we have it on land hand today the notes n given in payment for it will civilli fall due during the next city administration too another thin thing for the next mayor to look after The these seand and many other matters should bo be investigated by the citizens and taxpayers of logan before another city election rolls around it may be that this eighty thousand dollars received by the present city officials has been spent in a perfectly legitimate way botn but we doubt if it has been made to do the most good
