you latter day saints with pleasure for it is many years since since I 1 had the P privilege lege of meeting with the people of logan in conference assembled in fact many years have passed since binco I 1 lad bad the privilege to meet ineat with the latter day saints iu in utah territory in their conferences or in their public gatherings but times have changed and the hand of the lord is over his people for good god has blessed ns its and I 1 realize this morning in standing before you that we ive have been abundantly blessed by our father in heaven god has not deserted his people and I 1 am glad to say neither lias as his people deserted their god for that the spirit of oneness ne cs the desire to come together and to enjoy the influence of the holy spirit is generally prevalent among the people it prevails that to be paramount in the hearts of the latter latte day saints god in his mercy established us ill in these a mountains and valleys and I 1 see in the midst of the people an increase of the power of faith the valley is beautiful the settlements are beautiful and the coulten ances of the saints express to me that they enjoy the sweet influences of the spirit of god it is a pleasure to the brethren who have been on missions to come horn here among the latter day dav saints and meet with the people who are in sympathy with them it has been our lot 1 I refer to these brethren who ha have ve spoken here this morning and myself particularly on oil this occasion occasion it has been our lot to standby stand before the congregations congregation s of tb the e people in the world we have labored abroad in europe it has been mv my lot to meet with people in the british islands and upon the continent of europe they were not alto altogether ether the congregations of latter day saints many of them thein were aliens opposed to us in some come instances instance men have attended our gatherings gathering especially in germany who evou would ld immediately inform upon us and wo we would hasten from one phaoe place to another for the police would he be after us our meetings consequently quent ly were not very long loi 61 we would not stay very long iong 0 in one place and in speaking 0 to the people we would not talk very loud we ave possess the k gospel of the son of gocland god and it his has mado made us free indeed I 1 have been a free man all the timo that I 1 have been absent from you I 1 hive have not been in prison I 1 have been free but the freedom that I 1 enjoyed was iu in the mounta mountains ius and in the deserts a and nd in distant countries in the alie various vario us states of mexico and lid as I 1 have said aid in europe sometimes I 1 was in utah but I 1 had biad not the privilege of meeting with the latter day saints I 1 think it is between teven even and eight years since I 1 attended the public gatherings of the latter day saints in utah but times have changed arid and the lord has softened the hearts of men as ile he said ile he would do from froin time to time our lives are spared our liberties have returned and god is pouring out his spirit upon his people we have made a step in advance it is a long 0 stride that we no have taken pressing 0 to tho the goal to the heights heigh t i 3 where we shall be in communion with the spirit of god which is leading us onward unto that perfection which wo we hope to attain brethren and sisters I 1 feel to rejoice this morning in the liberties we possess in ici the spirit that is with us in this assembly ass emby for the opportunity of meeting here in this building for the sun that shines BO beautifully in the heavens for the atmosphere the surroundings 0 for the blessings that we enjoy an ali abundance e of peace and plenty is in the midst of the latter day saints not that our enemies have riven given it to us but an over ruling providence the hand of god led us through trials and today we have occasion to rejoice before him more than any an other people upon the face of the earah tins this is h not tit an idle statement but a true one wo nile are not left to be blown about by every wind of doctrine that is waft wafred wafted ed at ai our ears but we have a sure hope our hopes are arc fixed our knowl knowledge eda ed g a is certain and no man can take it from ns its the time will come that is not far distant when the latter day saints will have that oneness and unity of feeling sentiment and action ani and faith in god that they will bo be impervious to the attacks of the enemies of truth and righteousness ness there is ro po room in my heart today to day for any feeling L of hatred against any aiudi individual vidual the spirit of god has superceded superseded super ceded all feelings of that kind and isusi I 1 must give way to it I 1 must make myself right before god for times have changed and the latter day saints have reached a plain which they never possessed or never stood upon before since the church was organized in 1830 never before have we advanced advance das as weare we are advancing today to day I 1 rejoice with you in the mercies of almighty G god od for he has been merciful unto us and when our hearts of stone were removed and these hear hearts t s of flesh are given liven unto us we amplify this feel feeling ng of union to that extent that by and by when the servants of the quire us to do a certain ascertain thing wo we will move in a solid body to accomplish the work that god requires at our hands for we know it is tile the salvation of his chosen ones the lord will not give his kingdom to another people he will not take the church of christ from froin us ile he will not take from us the principles of the everlasting gospel ard and give them unto another people there is ia no other people upon the earth or inside of the earth so BO far as I 1 know if there should be such a thing as people existing inside of the earth there is no DO people inthis earth or on this eal eaith th to whom god will give the blessings ile he lias has designed for the deop 0 if they will prove worthy to bethe be the people of god now we meet to together eaber here and I 1 feel well but when I 1 go out to meet the trials of life such trials are very hard and it is in such very circumstances that the lord proves the latter day saints aud and brings them together 0 if a brother or a stranger 0 crosses me and lie he orders me off and threatens to beat me I 1 receive it as a trial that the lord has permitted that ile he has touched me ine in a small de degree 3 ree as lie he touched job I 1 will not turn and curse my iny father in heaven nor curse my brethren for the lord designs C it as a trial to come upon me to try my faith true when we meet to together ether in the world as branches and us as conferences we have a feeling of brot hely love among among 0 us we have this feeling here in zion but there are so many people mixed up with us t that L at this feeling 0 is not dot general in our congregations b taking the bible as the truth L find and the principles of the gospel gos there are arc no street cot preachers no psalm singers that have a chance in argument with our missionaries because latter day saints have the advantage 45 of them butia but if there ahe re of the world w will ill not dot listen is to us we must listen to them if we insist on expounding tile the principles of the gospel to am them they pet get angry and wo must stop and listen to 0 them we are not sent out to bo be taught c we insist but have bee been n sent out to teach arid and 1 they get angry and cry out joe smith it ia the work of the latter day saints to send the ali 0 gospel forth to this generation but there is a greater labor required of us ye yet t because of the many that h have ave passed behind the veil without a knowledge of the gospel and they must be officiated for liere bere in ahse temples that we are building now here are two items of business resting upon the latter day saints it seems beems to rao ine that we have a work that not only lasts during this life but that will keep us busy throughout the millennium which is nigh at our doors god has bas ebo chosen en you to do this work lie ile nos chosen a few one of a city and two of a family to do this work for the multitudes that have lave died without a knowledge of the gospel I 1 have never seen a people so united to together ether as I 1 have seen in tin th I 1 T temple ef n aple in ill ner salt lako city thre ar vas a general spirit of union union an a foundation oun dation was laid there in
