Show BARTCH GETS THERE. The Supreme Court Gap Filled With a Cipher. WASHINGTON, Jan. 4.-President Harrison filled a long pending vacancy in the territorial supreme bench nominating George W. Bartch today to be accociate [associate] justice of Utah supreme count. The president has had the matter under consideration for some time. Both he and the attorney-general at first were rather disposed to favor the application of Mr. Tatlock, as this gentleman made a good impression on the attorney-general when he came to Washington several months ago, and the latter was also pleased with the character of Mr. Tatlock's endorsers. About this time, however, Mr. Bartch's friends began working up a boom for him, and they sent petitions broadcast throughout the territory and as fast as they were signed they were forwarded to the attorney-general. They came on in such mumbers [numbers] that the president and General Miller finally decided that Mr. Bartch's candidacy represented more nearly the general sentiment of the people of the territory than did that of any of the other aspirants. Then, too, Chief Justice Zane lent the weight of his powerful influence to assist Mr. Bartch, and he did assist him quite as much probably as all other influences combined. Both the president and the attorney-general hold Chief Justice Zane in the highest esteem and his repeated communications to the department of justice not only endorsing Mr. Barch's candidacy, but insisting that of all of the candidates he was the better qualified for the place, influenced the president greatly in finally deciding in favor of the chief justice's candidate. |
