Show THE HOUSEHOLD Needlework Novelties. Some of the decorative and useful fancies of the season. Black satin workbags, with powderings of feathers done in gold thread, are very unique and handsome. This same decoration can be applied to book covers, sachets and other fancy articles, and is particularly attractive. Bedspreads of linen powdered all over with embroidered flowers are always in fashion and in favor with housewives. There are many novel designs in toilet covers, but the pure white ones look so dainty and clean that they are perhaps most popular. A very elegant white slip in linen has a handsome design of orchids tied with ribbon, worked in yellow silk, and another white linen one has a scalloped border all around of Roman embroidery. A white sateen cover has an effective design of conventional poppies and scrollwork, which might be varied as to color, according to the taste of the worker. A large monogram is often placed in the center of the cover, worked in gold stitches, and never fails to look well. One in clean linen is treated in this way, trimmed with insertion and lace, the monogram being the only work it displays. A slip of yellow lawn, with a deep frill to match around the edge, has sprays of clover, worked in natural colors, scattered all over it, with a few bees hovering over the flowers. Most effective is a shrimp pink linen trimmed with ivory lace and embroidered with chrysanthemums in flax thread, with a large initial in the middle. A similar cover is in blue linen, the design being daisies and grass, carried out in white flax. Handy trifles are represented by low enameled camp stools, holding circular cretonne bags lined with sateen and smartened up with fly ribbon bows. A Nile green table cover is radiant with a border of bold scrolls, wrought in several shades of brown and yellow silk, with gold outlinings. New blotter covers are of linen, decorated with groups of flowers and fruit or a branch from a fruit tree. The flat oblong bag used when traveling for handkerchiefs, brushes or any small articles we wish to keep together is most useful. It is just a pocket, with flap, and a spray across. Photograph frames, which are contrived to many ingenious fashions, find favor because they are both useful and decorative. The simplest styles are the hanging triangular or oblong panels of plush or velvet. These are divided into sections by bands of gold galon [galloon] and trimmed with bows and loops of ribbon. At the back is inserted a loop in gold cord to suspend the frame to the wall. |
