Show OGDEN ITEMS. We clip the following items from the Ogden Herald of the 26th. The town of Stuart, on the Deer Lodge extension of the Utah & Northern, is to be sold on Saturday, September 2d. Arrangements are being made for an excursion from Butte for such as desire to attend the site. The track of the Oregon Short Line is now seventeen miles west of Montpelier, Bear Lake County, and will be at Soda Springs in about fifteen days, as the track layers make about one and a fourth miles advance each day. A short time since four men were convicted in the Justice's Court in this city, two of petty larceny, and two of grand larceny. The first two were committed to jail for 30 days, and the last two named respectively, William Brooks and Hanson Henderson, were committed to await the action of the Grand Jury. They were all placed in jail for safe keeping. On Thursday evening, they prepared for an attempt to escape. They succeeded in sawing off two of the iron bars which act as a window to their cell, and then rested for the night. Last night they resumed their operations, sawed off two more bars, threw them aside, and one of them thrust his head through the aperture to take in the situation, when he saw pointed at his frontispiece a little snap jack in the hands of Marshal Alma Keyes. Of course, he drew back in a hurry, again to occupy his legitimate quarters. The police officers being aware of what had occurred the previous night had said nothing, but posted themselves in position and awaited events, and thus foiled the jail birds in their attempts to leave their nests and fly away to parts unknown. Brooks and Hendersen have been taken to the Pen., and the other two have been made secure. |
