Show SERIOUS ACCIDENT. Charles Smith loses a leg by an accident near Battle Creek on the U. & N. R.R. About seven o'clock yesterday morning, Chas. (Charles) Smith, who has charge of the U. & N. R.R. telegraph repairs, left Battle Creek, Ida. (Idaho), northward bound accompanied by two men on a hand-car. When about three miles had been run the car jumped the track, Smith, who was sitting in front being thrown off his right leg passing between the car cog-wheel completely crushing it, and exposing the bone. W.K. Morrison, one of the men pumping was thrown on his back and received considerable muscular injury. The other man fortunately escaped injury. The party managed to return to Battle Creek, where a special engine was at once detailed to bring them to Logan for medical attendance. On arrival here, the two injured men were removed to the Cache Valley House where they received efficient care. They were placed under the medical supervision of Dr. (Doctor) O.C. Ormsby, who after examining Smith pronounced amputation necessary, which was successfully accomplished about four inches above the ankle. Dr. (Doctor) Ormsby was assisted in the operation by Drs. (Doctors) Behle and Norcross. From enquires made previous to going to press, we learn that both the patients are progressing favorably. Mr. Smith formerly resided at Omaha, Neb. (Nebraska) and Mr. Morrison near Pleasant Plain, Iowa. |
