Show SALE OF THE COUNTY BUILDING. The following query has been sent us to be answered through the Leader: Editor Leader-It is currently reported that the County Court has sold the rock building and lot on Main Street at private sale. Is this true? If so, what authority has the Court ?? posting of property belonging to the people without giving public notice. We all have [unreadable] And how could the Court know that some other party would not pay more? A little light on this subject would greatly oblige. Many Citizens. Section 4 of an as approved Jan. 8th, 1881, and which has not, so far as we can learn, been repealed or changed, save, in relation to the duties and powers of county courts: "This court is authorized and required to take the management of a county business, and the care and custody of all county property, except such as is placed by it in the custody of another." If the business of the county involves transactions in real estate, the county court may consummate them, and as the statute gives no directions as to the manner of proceedings in such transactions, the court may act according to its best judgment, and is not required to give the public notice nor opportunity for competition suggested by our correspondent. The building referred to, together with a certain city lot purchased by the county for $1,000, was sold to the U. O. M. & B. Co. for $3,700, in part payment for the new court house. We presume the court was of the opinion that better terms could not possibly be made with any other purchaser, and therefore deemed it unnecessary to advertize a sale of county property, however proper such a course might have been.
