Show WE GROW. We are very happy to announce to our readers this week, that we have outgrown our "patent outside," and in lieu thereof, we give in this issue, on our first page, the minutes of our last quarterly conference and two discourses that were delivered at the funeral services of the late President Joseph Young, July 19th, in the Tabernacle at Salt Lake, as they appeared in the Deseret News, and on our fourth page appears a part of the list of premiums to be awarded at the fair next month. We shall from time to time, give to our readers discourses delivered by the Presidency of the Church, Apostles, and the authorities and leading elders of this Stake of Zion. Such reading will, we feel confident, be much more highly appreciated than the kind that has hitherto appeared upon the first and fourth pages of the Leader. It is not generally known among our readers that those pages of our paper have hitherto been printed in San Francisco, but such is the case. There is a large establishment there in which one side of a large number of the newspapers published on the Pacific coast are printed, and the type, when once set, can be used in the printing of many or all of them without being reset. There is thus an immense saving, and the proprietor of this establishment can furnish paper, in weekly supplies, printed on one side, as cheaply as the whole paper could be bought, provided he is allowed the use of a given amount of advertising space, which is usually done. Up to the present issue, the outside of the Leader has been printed at this establishment; but the other sides of the selections that have appeared on our first and fourth pages has been beyond our control. This is rather ?? to an editor or publisher, and we have decided to print both sides at home, though at a greatly increased expense, as we wish to exclude from our columns all matter of an objectionable nature. We are confident that this improvement will be appreciated by our patrons, and will render the Leader more valuable to them. |
