Show FIRE! IT IS VERY SELDOM that there be any occasion for the dread cry of fire to resound through the streets of Logan, and in that the citizens may deem themselves fortunate. But on Saturday morning at an early hour, people living in the vicinity of the U. O. Foundry were roused from their slumbers by loud call, and hastening out found that flames were leaping from the old building, occupied by Roberts & Son as a pottery just East of Logan bridge and near the foundry. Mr. N. W. Illrono? was the first one to discover the fire and he readily required assistance. In a very few minutes about one hundreds persons with buckets were at the scene, prepared to do their utmost to preserve the property. As the building was situated on an extremely narrow strip of land between the river and the next house, water was plentiful and was applied where it would do the most good. But a short time elapsed before the flames were extinguished, yet not until considerable damage was done. There was a large stock of crockery were in the house most of it just ready for the kiln; and of course the greater part of this was saved. The building itself, was only slightly damaged. The origin of the fire is supposed to be as follows. On Thursday a fire had been made in the furnace, but on that afternoon it was thought to be extinguished, and no more fuel was put in. The fire, however, had burned its way through to a wooden partition and made itself apparent at the time and with the effect already stated. Different estimates are made of the loss, ranging from $50 to $150. It falls heavily upon the proprietors of the pottery, Moses, James and Jerome Roberts, as they are poor men, just starting in a business which would be of public benefit. We understand that a movement has been inaugurated by the authorities of the Logan wards to assist the Roberts? and it is to be hoped that a liberal response will be given. |
