Herald Jan. 21st:--The host of friends of Mr. George Reynolds were surprised and delighted to see him walking the streets on Thursday morning, a free man. Mr. Reynolds is the gentleman whose name has become known all over this country as the defendant in the suit carried to the United States Supreme Court as a test of the constitutionality of the law against polygamy. The result of the case is known. Mr. Reynolds was sentenced on June 14th, 1879, to two years imprisonment and $500 fine; on the 16th of June he was taken to the penitentiary at Lincoln, Neb. [Nebraska]; about a month later he was brought to the penitentiary here, where he has been ever since. He has been given the benefit of the copper or good conduct act, and has thus saved over five months time. |
