TWENTY thousand Knights Templars took part in the grand procession of that order in Chicago, on Aug. 17th. <br><br> THERE are no signs of yellow fever in the south this season. <br><br> A WASHINGTON paper declares that great census frauds have been perpetrated in the southern states. <br><br> ADELAIDE Neilson, the great actress, died of heart disease while sitting at a table in a famous restaurant in Paris a few days ago. <br><br> DURING the week, 5,283 immigrants arrived in New York, and the deaths of the week were 627, births 615. <br><br> AUSTIN, Texas, Aug. 11. Six men, while partaking of a water melon in Falls county, suddenly died. It is supposed that Paris green, used to kill insects, was the cause. <br><br> SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 16.-John Kelleher, residing in Oakland, with his wife and neighbor, Mrs. King, indulged in a drunken carouse, last night, in the course of which they set the house on fire. Two of his children, Eugene and Annie, aged two and five respectively, were burned to a cinder; James, aged four, was burned fatally, Mrs. Kelleher will probably die from her injuries, Mrs. King was badly scorched, and Kelleher was slightly hurt. <br><br> BALTIMORE, Aug. 11.-Fifty-five young women took the black vail [veil] to-day in the convent of Notre Dame, at Govmanstown, near this city. The trains from Baltimore to Govmanstown were crowded in the morning with the friends and relatives of the postulants. The ceremony was impressive and was witnessed by a crowded congregation. <br><br> HARRISBURG, Aug. 14.-Twenty coal cars were wrecked by the breaking of an iron bridge over a canal near the depot here, on the Reading railroad. <br><br> LONDON, Aug. 14-According to reports from Bucharest, 45,000 Russians are concentrating near the border, to be ready in the event of the action of Bulgaria. The transportation of troops is continually going on near the Roumanian frontier. A steamer arrived at Gaintz on Saturday with Russian artillery and an ambulance destined for Bulgaria. It is also stated the Russians are concentrating at ?? on the Austrian frontier. <br><br> TORONTO, Aug. 16.-Robt. Wilke, wholesale jeweler of this city, his son Bertie, aged 11, and daughter Florence, aged 15, were drowned at Sturgeon Point to day. Florence and her brother were bathing and the boy getting out beyond his depth, the father who was in a boat jumped out to save him. The daughter also went to the rescue and all were drowned together. <br><br> LONDON, Aug. 17.-A military correspondent of the Times says. We have at last received a statement of the losses to the British by the battle on the 27th of July, which positively places the number of casualties at 21 officers, 811 Europeans and 790 natives killed or missing and 23 officers and 80 men wounded. <br><br> THE BRITISH forces in Asia are having a hard time of it. The Afghans in the vicinity of Candahar, a city garrisoned by British and seemingly a base of supplies for them, is menaced by a force of 3,000 ??, and 5,000 infantry, who are well provided with artillery. <br><br> THE SEIZURE of arms at Cork is generally regarded as a melodramatic performance for effect in New York. Only fifty-seven old smooth-bore muskets were stolen, and twenty have been recovered. The fact that fifty men suddenly assembled, nearly all with revolvers [section missing/unreadable] China of trade restrictions: Unless we are mistaken as to the scope of this change, it will prove to be one of the most significant events to the commerce of the nineteenth century. The operation of the new conditions may be slow, but cannot be ultimately a matter of small moment to the commercial nations, in that 350,000,000 of people whose external commerce is now limited to $?50,000,000 imports and exports are now as free to cultivate external trade as any other nation. One important result will be that foreign trade will no longer be confined to five treaty posts. The natives at any of the numerous populous cities on the vast seaboard of the empire will henceforth be at liberty to transact business with any country. There is value in this event to foreign merchants who will ultimately find their way of doing business through the natives at the ports which they are now excluded through the absence of treaty arrangements. The chance of opening markets in the heart of China gives more promise than a hundred of the colonies after which European governments are so eagerly straining. <br><br> DENVER, Col., Aug. 16.-The Tribune has a long special from Messala, N. M. to the effect that there is much excitement throughout Messala Valley over the elopement of Father Todoro Rowalt, a priest of Las Cruces and a beautiful and brilliant young lady Miss Margurita Garcia, from the convent of sisters of Laretto. She recently entered the convent, it is said, against the wishes of her parents. After continued scandalous proceedings the couple eloped and were overtaken at a small hamlet whence the priest appeared in dishabille, and was struck and would have been killed by an uncle of the girl if officers had not interfered. The priest and girl were finally married. The former tells horrible stories about bishops and other priests. |
