Grant, their commander in chief, has issued orders to this effect.<br><br> ON THE EVENING of July 28th, about 20,000 democrats held a ratification meeting in New York at which Tilden presided and spoke.<br><br> FROM Alabama telegrams it appears that gigantic preparations have been made for the perpetration of fraud at the coming elections.<br><br> SEVERE fighting has lately taken place between Mexicans and Apache Indians under Victoria, with indecisive results.<br><br> SINCE the conventions were held nine post offices throughout the country have been called Garfield and one Hancock.<br><br> President Hayes has already begun preparations for his exit from the White House.<br><br> LONDON, July 28.-A telegram from the Governor of Bombay says Gen. Primrose telegraphs to-day from Gandahar as follows: "Gen. Burrows force is annihilated. We are going into the citadel."<br><br> THE following is the Reuter dispatch announcing the defeat of the British: Simla, July 28. Gen. Burrows has been severely defeated by ?? Khan, sustaining a great loss. His forces were dispersed and compelled to fly, being pursued three miles. They are now straggling back to Gandahar in dribbles. Two guns were lost.<br><br> It is believed at the War Office that Gen. Burrows' force consisted of a total of about 2,700 men.<br><br> ATLANTA, July 31.-Jonesboro is in great excitement over the outrage on Joe Thompson, colored, who was beaten, and whose daughter was killed by masked men on Wednesday night. Seven arrests have been made. Hundreds of negroes are in town, and there is great excitement. The government has ordered the military to go down to Atlanta, as it is feared the negroes will make an effort to lynch the prisoners. |
