Show A hero among physicians is Dr. South, of Western Texas. He was warned some time ago that his life was to pay the forfeit of having voted on the grand jury for the indictment of a certain band of desperadoes. One night a man rode up to the doctor's ranch and informed him that the wife of the ring-leader of the gang was ill, and that he must attend her. He naturally thought it was a trick to get him out and kill him, but he was conscientious in his profession. He got his horse and rode away with the messenger right into the gang of desperadoes, and dismounting, entered the tent of the woman. There lay the sufferor, while the man who had promised to kill the doctor stood near by. The doctor drew his revolver, placed it on the pillow, and remarked that he would "attend to professional calls first and personal ones afterward." The desperadoes were struck with his courage and humanity, and trebled his fee instead of shooting him. |
