Show IN OUR last issue appeared a communication signed "Beppo," giving a description of the ball held on Valentine eve in Providence. Since the article was published a great many comments have been made upon it and also upon the supposed writer-several people going so far as to impute to our correspondent anything but a good motive in writing as he did. One communication has been already received here which contains unjustifiable remarks on the character of the unknown "Beppo;" and also an attempted criticism on some of the language used by him. Of course we do not publish the article mentioned for several reasons some of which we will state. Our columns are not open for the use of those whose main object in writing for the press is to gratify a personal spite. The article written by Beppo did not contain a single word which was out of place, or a single unkind criticism on the person or action of any one who was present at the ball, but was merely intended as a humorous sketch. Besides this, the language used in the rejected communication is a direct reflection on this paper for allowing Beppo's article to appear, as if the person who wrote considered himself a more proper and competent judge as to what should be printed in the LEADER than the publishers thereof. |
