Show LOGAN AND SMITHFIELD CANAL. Probably one of the most important enterprises of the kind ever attempted in northern Utah, is the building of the Logan and Smithfield canal. A description of the route to be followed has already appeared in the LEADER; but we believe that only an imperfect idea of the work has ever yet been conveyed. Any person who wishes to obtain an understanding of the labor and the difficulties attendant thereon, must visit the scene of action. Probably in no place in America would such a task be even contemplated except in Utah. But the men who have taken an interest in this matter have had considerable experience, and the ultimate result cannot be doubted. James H. Martineau, Esq., made the preliminary survey, and he is chief engineer. Mr. Edward Hamen?, is working engineer and in the absence of Mr. Martineau, has charge of the labor. Thomas E. Bicks?, Esq., is Superintendent and under his vigorous care everything is bound to progress successfully. From 30 to 100 men are constantly employed, but there is room for plenty more; and it would be well for all those who are interested to exert themselves that the work may not lag. From the report made by the directors of the company to the County Court we quote the following: From the top of the north bench at the mouth of Logan canyon, the proposed canal is located along the side of the mountain a distance of 8,000 feet to a point where the river will be tapped. The fall in said 8,000 feet is a little over 17 feet, and the approximate cost of said 8,000 feet of ditch or canal, which must be nine feet wide at the bottom, will be $20,000. From the top of said bench at the mouth of Logan canyon, the projected canal is located with a fall of ??? feet to the mile and will run along to the top of the bench north of Hyde Park to a point about a quarter of a mile east of Bishop Roskelley's barn, thence in a northeasterly direction to the foot of the mountain; thence northwesterly across the brow of the bench to a point about 200 yards below Smithfield raw mill. The amount of tax per acre on the lands to be benefited to construct said canal will be about $10. |
