Show RELIEF SOCIETY PIC NIC. An event transpired yesterday which was on a grander scale than any similar affair that ever took place in this valley. For some time previous, preparations had been in progress for a mammoth pic nic to be given under the auspices of the Relief Societies of Logan. The Tabernacle was secured for the purpose, and early yesterday morning the conveying of dishes and edibles into the basement commenced. Two o'clock p. m. was the hour appointed for the commencement of the feasting. At about that hour, a large congregation who had assembled up stairs were notified to repair to the basement. In the latter five tables, extending the entire length of the apartment, and a shorter one were laden with tempting viands, and as many as could find room were soon seated at them. At least five hundred people were seated at one time, at the tables. Just before the feasting began the presentation of an elegant silver cake basket and silver goblet to Sister Elizabeth Benson, president of the Relief Societies of this Stake, was made by Apostle Moses Thatcher, who accompanied the ceremony with a few appropriate remarks. The sisters had contributed for the purchase of the articles. The feasting over, the people assembled upstairs again, where several addresses were delivered. Thus was celebrated the 14th anniversary of the organization of the first Relief Society in Logan. An immense quantity of food remaining from the feast, was given to the poor. |
