Show NEW FLOUR MILL IN LOGAN. The new Central Mills, occupying the site of the old General Mills, are now complete, and making flour for home markets and exportation. Messrs. Peterson & Card, owners of the old Mill, contemplated improvements upon this mill. During the summer, President Preston secured a one-third interest and it was then decided to demolish the old mill and upon its site erect a mill new throughout. Increased water priveleges [privileges] were secured, and the drawings, plans and superintendency of the construction were intrusted [entrusted] to D. H. Spencer, Jr., the well known millwright. Recently Wm. [William] Hendricks the ?.R. ??? has purchased the interest of Mr. Peterson, making Preston, Card & Hendricks the present owners. The mill edifice was erected by the Logan D. O. Building Co. In September the erection of machinery was begun. Water is conducted to the [unreadable line] water wheel by 500 feet of pipe laid under ground below the frost line. This pipe is 35 inches in diameter inside, made of wooden staves strongly hooped with iron?. The wood work of this pipe was manufactured by ???M. & B. Co., and the hoops by the U.? O. Foundry, who did all of the blacksmith work and much of the machine work of the mill. The calculation for strength and size of pipe involved a considerable knowledge of practical hydraulics and strength of materials. The head of the water is 24 feet and the pressure upon the lower sections of pipe is 10 pounds per square inch. The most through [thorough] tests have proven the calculations correct, and the workmanship good, as the pipe conducts ??? cubic feet of water per minute required to supply the wheel, without loss of head and with absolutely no leakage. The water wheel is in an iron globe fence? and furnishes 51 horse power, which is transmitted to the various machines by a well arranged system of shafting, ???, belting and pulleys. There are three runs? of ??? feet French burr millstones and one 21 inch under runner which constitute the grinding machinery. Some power and driving shafting are also provided to ??? of the new system of grinding rolls, if further experiments with this last innovation in milling shall sustain the favorable opinions already entertained thereof by numerous practical mill men. The cleaning machinery consists of separator, ??? and brush. The flour dressing machines are a three reel bolt? chest, Geo. [George] F. Smith's middling purifier and Hughes bran dresser?. Attached to the purifier is one of Spencer's improved ???, the invention of the ??? mill wright. Elevator, conveyors and all the paraphernalia of a first class flower [flour] mill are also seen on every hand. Included in the ??? of the mill is a Benton Diamond Burr Dresser? where with the fine hard point of that gem is made to cut and dress the exceedingly obdurate burr stone, and do the work in one hour, which with the best steel plate cannot be done in less than eight hours. The capacity of the mills is about 8?? pounds of flower [flour] per hour. All the machinery moves smoothly and works well. Thus is added to the industries of Logan, another of those fine establishments which will soon give to our city the reputation, if not the title, of Minneapolis of the Rocky Mountains. |
