Show Observatory on Mount Etna An astronomical and meteorological observatory will be built on the spot formerly occupied by the so-called "English House" on Mount Etna. This has been a favorite project for some time with both native and foreign astronomers, but its present success is chiefly due to the distinguished Italian astronomer, now director of the observatory of the Roman College, Prof. Tacchior. It is considered equally necessary by the meteorologists who, in their recent congress, held in Rome, expressed an earnest desire for its establishment. It will be called the Bellini Observatory, in honor of that musician, who was born in the province of Catania, and near Mt. Etna. It is 9000 feet above the sea, and the lens of the telescope will measure thirty-five centimes. It will probably be completed in the year 1880. A convenient hotel for travelers will be attached to it, as the want of a safe refuge at that height would be severely felt. - Letter from Italy in Cincinnati Gazette. |
