Show conference SERMON delivered in tho the logan lagan Tabor tabernacle nacle sunday may esth 1892 1802 APOSTLE MUSES THATCHER the th c met meetings e i n 2 8 of today to day leave lave been a source suurje 0 of f very great gratification to me and I 1 presume that to be the case with each of you who wore were present we certainly have hare reason to be grateful to the lord for tile the numerous manifestations of his is preserving care and loving kindness to us as a people and I 1 am sure the words to which we have listened today to day have caused great joy in our hearts I 1 do not IP believe that any people who have lived in any any age of the world have been more mori abundantly blessed than have the latter day saints for a perfect stream of revelation has come to ns bs from the lay day on which the church was organized un until til now we have never been without it and at no time in tho the history of tile the people have we had occasion to doubt for while the road has been straight and the wa way y leading to eternal life lias has been narrow arrow ri yet the voice oice v of inspiration has constantly sounded in the ears cars of the people and there has been a constant light 0 to guide them and yet that light being 0 the spirit of god col is eitrem extremely cly sensitive and we ive havi learned no do doubt by individual that our safety consists alone in our obedience on C e to the law of the holy one and that each of us is responsible for the manner in which lie he uses his time and talents that this work is an individual work that we shall be judged judg 0 d by the deeds done in the body as well as by the words of the mouth we sometimes ire arc compelled to meet what might be considered tempestuous times to sail ail not at always upon smooth waters but the rough n experiences through 0 which we have passed has but tended to make us experienced mariners marinero ma I 1 have watched with profound interest the mover movements bents of th the e people and the spirit by which they are at times tin ies controlled and I 1 can call bear testimony to the words of president cannon tins this ni morning orning and to those of president woodruff this afternoon they ire are meat in in fe ceason afon the inspiration of the lord to his people and it is only when we having eyes bee not ears cars but will not hear arid and hearts that tha t r refuse c fuse to und understand er stand that our minds become darkened and we ene are arc full of forebodings foreboding fore boding bodings but how marvelously the lord works in the midst of this people when the powers of satan and his bis influences to which president woodruff referred tend to darken the minds of the people the voice of the lord coming to his servant directs in a matter that seems very sim simple p to arid and yet liow how often have t they I 1 ler proved brov ed effective among 0 the people peo p to nothing that has occurred for yeara y ars has been so r gratifying 0 to the lat ter day saints or lias has borne a stronger testimony to them than that which occurred a week ago today to day the gathering together of the people throughout all the length and breadth of zion fasting bastin t and praying coming before the lord with I 1 broken hearts and contrite spirits desiring to forgive and be forgiven opening up their souls in ill conf confession eLsion ono one to another arid and permitting tile the spirit of god to how flow into their heart licar tF witness tile the result no manifestation of pride no disposition to sound a horn upon the corner or to maks much of gifts that we might be seen or honor of men but following 0 tho the inspiration of the holy spirit regarding that sacred care the feelings of tho the poor arid and those who may have been regarded as less fortunate in securing curing ec the riches of Us this world goin going under the hie inspiration of that spirit and whispering into the cars of thoe thoas tho e were ivere who prepared to write down the names arid and record tile the subscriptions which were willingly offered for the completion of the templo in salt alt lake city recognizing izing 0 that the action n which was taken upon tho the day on oil which the capstone eap tone was laii laid I was the mind arid and will and voice of the lord to his people there hearts moved in one co common ninion interest towards the accomplishment of one common call cause se a happy people the latter day S saints aru are when inspired by tile gifts of the alie holy spirit how beautiful appear their features how 0 n are the sentiments of their hearts what a great contrast when under these conditions as compared with the conditions with which they are surrounded when inspired by another adoth er spirit which hardens the heart and mars with a cruel land hand their features who of us have not learned by experience what a terrible thin thing it is to be under the control of wicked influences to have lave rankling in our hearts hatred towards toward any of the creatures of god who of us do not know that the lord lias has told us that it is our duty and that we should seek to have our hearts filled with ditl i compassion towards all men this should especially be tile the case in reference to the household of faith ile he has told us through the prophet joseph that if we w would do this our confidence should waie wax strong in the lord that oar sceptre should be an everlasting sceptre tre arid and our mi dominion should be an eternal dominion that should flow unto us ui for ever and ever and that without compulsory means how sweet then it is to follow the inspiration of the holy spirit and how effectual is that spirit bobring to bring tire the people pomplo together togge thorl 1 do we recognize the inspiration of the lord through our prophet and leader in the calling 0 of that fast I 1 have heard sometimes that there was ail anxiety biety even among the thoughtful elders ciders high priests and seventies lest the spirit of the world might divide the people and lead them to do and say things that might end in disaster but at no timo time have I 1 doubted knowing t that god would cause came his servants 0 to o direct tile the people aright arid and knowin knowing i also that christ and satan have never coic comen n c conflict wherein jesus has not ultimately proven victorious it is a consolation to me to reflect upon the inspired declaration that the majority of this people shall always be right ri glita a few may in ay fall by the wayside and nono none of us unless god ba haq scaled upon you more than ho be has upon me and given you an ass assurance arance which I 1 do not claim i can count yourselves safe one si single n gle hour when not keeping 7 the of god I 1 fear I 1 for men who alio keep away from the congre congregations actions of the people we know if we cease to take food even for a few fay days that we would perish of hunger and yet it appears to me ine that we have lave elders ciders an and ol 01 men in high places in this church who seem to think that they can call live for years without coming in the midst of the people without partaking of the sacrament emblematic of the broken body and split spilt blood of jesus christ I 1 confess to you that it is a mystery to tome me how they live at all butas but as year succeeds ye year ar to do we not pee fee their minds growing darker and darker what should be done it is our duty us as their brethren as their friends to go to them quietly with a meek and lowly spirit not nit with a fault finding spirit and taking thelby them by the baud andy lead them to the con congregations gregat ions of the people and to the table of the lord for I 1 tell you my illy brethren and sisters wo we cannot live before the lord and feel that we ive are safe kafe if we neglect the plain duties that have been by revelation rev there are a number of the brethren from whom ou would like to hear and I 1 am not disposed to occupy much mach of their time but I 1 i rejoice rejoice with you and am exceed exceeding in glad by reason of the manifestations that wore ivere made sit at th the c general fast a week ago 0 AIl whether lether the presidency in respect of this matter will bo be able to my as moses said anciently when tile elili rell of israel were called upon for means with which to build the tabernacle taber arid and when men inell and women came NO with th finger and car rings wit with jewels ind and with ther gold and silver until the prophet cried that it was enough I 1 nm am not able to say eay but we havo have faith and confidence ill in the people and in the lord that lie will inspire them to device liberal ways for by our liberality shall we ive live let w ais therefore manifest i our faith by our works by furnish ing in 1 in the time specified means with which to complete comple to tile the salt lake temple a at t tile tho date fixed so that it may bo be dedicated according to the expressed wish of president woodruff fl may rich blessings rest upon him making 0 him strong in body and vigorous vig irous in ill mind may tho the gift and power of tile the holy ghost fill hirt ili s breast anti and c comfort 0 anfort his soul goul that lie may shower blessings on oil the heads of the IWO people ilc us is in the past may liia his counselors lie ono one with him I 1 a threefold three fold cord that cannot be broken and way may the quorum of the twelve see eye to eye with god and be one with thu the presidency the seventies in like manner and nil all the quorums of the holy priesthood shall it be truthfully said of any who have received the inspiration of god and who know that god lives and jesus lives and that this is the church and kingdom king doin of god shall it be said eaid I 1 say of any one of us that we are willin willing to sell our birthright for a mess mess of gentile pottage god grant that it may not be so is is my my prayer AMEN |
