Show THREATENING LETTERS LET-TERS RECEIVED BY , NUMBER COUNT! GITJZFNS Excitement in Springville Over Reports Concerning "Gun-j Play Maxwell Officers Have i Suspicion and Hope to Ap- prehend Blackmailers. Judging from the reports receiv ed at the sheriff's office in this city, tho people of Springville are somewhat some-what excited over the alleged killing kill-ing which is to take place. The threatening card nnd letter which was received bv Henry and John Reynolds has put tho eople on the uneasy list. Like the boy who is afraid to go home in tho dark, every little noise frightens. It waB reported in Springville last evening that "Gunplay" Maxwell had escaped from prison in Nevada, and wbb in town to do business with a gun. The report wss quite freely free-ly circulated and many people took precaution to lock their doors and chicken coops, etc. Tho report concerning Maxwell is a false one and vvlilin the people were advised of the fact they felt better. It is now thought that a clue has been found whereby the man guilty of blackmail in the Reynolds case may be apprehended. He is a resident of Springville and from the statements made by the officers it may be slid that he is possessor of nn unbalanced mind. He is being watched, and if enough evidence enn he obtained he will be arrested. It is not thought that he will carry out his threat, MANY LKTTr.RB SENT. The fact lies Just now been revealed re-vealed that many of the promiuent citizens of the county have been receiving re-ceiving letters os a threatening nature. na-ture. Among those to receive them were Senator Gardner of Spanish Fork, Mr. Huntington of Leland, Mrs. Height of Payson and several others. These letters were received during a period of three years. Some of the above named parties have received more than one threatening threat-ening missive. In each caso the letters have asked for money and failure to comply with the requests of the letters, the receivers would be killed. Thus far no injury has been received although the threatening threat-ening epistles have been a source of worry. OFFICERS HAVE SUSPICION. The county officers are of the opiuion that the letters were sent by people living in a town in the south end of the couuty. According Accord-ing to their theory there are four men implicated in the business. To this date insufficient evidence has been gathered to apprehend the suspects, but inasmuch as the blackmail work continues, n special effort will be made to catch the offenders. It is not the opinion of the officers offi-cers that the letters to the Reynolds Rey-nolds people have been sent by the writers of the other epistles. They .arc-in., differed J.',1?d . y.rl.tiniL.?il!i mulled under different eircumstano- (S. It is sure that if the offenders are caught, they will be ordered by j the federal courts to spendacer-j' tain period of time in the govern-1 ment prison in Leavenworth, Kan- j sas, for disobeying the jKWtolliee laws. |
