Show THE OVJER-NOR' CONVENTION (By L. A. Hiollen'beck.) The governors' convention has jffst .clceed down In Connecticut. 'Governor 'Gov-ernor Dern was there arid &s usual he was elected chairman of the convention. con-vention. When the convention was about to close, Governor Dern asked them to meet in Salt Lake next year, and although there were com,peti-tore com,peti-tore at fiTst, they decided unanimously unanimous-ly to meet at Salt Lake City next year and thai Governor Dern was given full power to name that date. It is a matter of considerable satisfaction satis-faction to know that Governor Dem Is given so much deference on the part ol a governors' convention, and. it Is recognized that as a presiding officer he is both affable and clever as well as fair. The governors of both South Carolina Car-olina and North Carolina wanted to pass a resolution endorsing Hoover's policy In appointing a commission to Und out the cause el the increase of j crime in the United Startes, which of course involved the question of prohibition pro-hibition and which was a bombshell CTiat was likely to cause an exTtsion at' the Governors' convention. Many ci the governors did not want that to happen, ard Governor Dern as ca:rman, handled the -matter with commendable wisdom, recognizing and indirectly approving tae president, presi-dent, and still not submitting the res-r?strcn res-r?strcn fcr discussion. There Is an eld traditional ftory of, at one time there was a meeting between the I governors cf North and South Carolina, Caro-lina, and both of them liked their letters pretty well, and tht-re had been a little lull in the conversation and the governor cf Nbrrh Carolina Raid In (hp rnvprrrr nf Crnli Pirn. i:r.a, "Its a long time between 'tfrir.ks.' That was a long time ago, and the tradition dcsn't seem to te in good form down there at .tlTis time, and the long t?rr.e oetween drinJis is longer than ever with the j governors, but with a lot cf people cTo'wn there along the coast, the time between drinks is shorter Than ever. Anyway, we ere to have the governors' gov-ernors' convention next year, and we must make ourselves good entertainers, entertain-ers, and that means that a let Cr us must go down into our jeans 'and give the governor a good fund to STow tj!T governors that Utah is a great state and that ber' people are good fellows and hospitable. rv |
