Show r a a MARY GRAHAM c J MAGGIE'S PEN HOLDER When n Maggie Maggie- had awakened that morning she had be been n gr with kisses es and with hugs bugs and with exclamations exclamations motions of Many happy returns of ot the tile day Many happy returns of the day Around her breakfast place had been little sprays of ot green and bright flowers Cowers h here re and there Then there had been the great birthday table Of course later there would be a party mid and Maggie's favorIte favorite favorite favor favor- ite friends ls would come conic to the party and there would be games and all sorts of ot fun But nut the great birthday table was wasHie the Hie most Important of nil all Only MaggIe's Maggie's haggles haggle's Mag hag gies gie's family came to this part of the time celebration The table Itself was not so very ery great In fact It was a ver very shabby old table tuble The rhe table had been made for a sewIng sewing sewing sew sew- ing table and at times when It was not In use It could be folded up and put Jut behind a door There were measurements measurements measurements meas meas- across the table so people could measure hems or whatever they want wanted scanted d to measure measure measure-If If they wanted to to measure anything As a matter of fact the table was seldom used as a sewing table Another Another Another An An- other still smaller table did for that This table was used for out door out door of-door steps back steps meals sometimes and It was always used for birthday celebrations so it felt like e a great table even If its legs weren't so very strong or orso orso orso so very cry certain and even en If It did wobble a good deal Maggie had been escorted to the birthday table tuble by the ringing of an old brass bell The old brass bell had a aman's amans amans aman's amaus mans man's face on one side of r it it and and on the other side of it was a mans man's face too Both Doth gentlemen looked exactly alike As As' Maggie had sat down at the table ta ta- table ble the chair In which she sat had been decorated with ribbons and n M t a 1 L V. V u Small Present With a Poem flowers The ribbons were not new but they ere were very ery gay and bright Just the same In fact they were nicer than new ribbons They were kept in an nn old cand candy box which had long fong long since seen the last of ot its candy o and d they I were brought out at nt birthday times They knew all about these tine fine cele cele- In f front ont of Maggie there was a cake and upon the cake were candles A Afew Afew Afew few of the candles were new but most of them were old The Tice candles were used until they all burnt out and the they never ne did that on Just one birthday a They were hi blown own out so their grease would not fall down on the fine Iced calve cake And then there were presents upon the table tahle every present wrapped up so Interestingly interesting I There were cre poems to be read rend and I speeches speeches' to be made but last of all nil came a n thin small present with a poem attached to it The lime present was a pen hol holder er and It was heln being given ghen hen to Maggie by hy her sled Clear the time Track Clear the Track was a lovely lo sled and always gave ga Magpie Maggie Jle a present The pen holder hold hold- er wu was tan in color with a black collar and this was the poem of the pen penholder penholder holder Inn l haJ happy returns or of the day I I.
