C MOORING Rabbits are very particular as to what they eat and feed only on vegetable vegetable vegetable vege vege- table matter They prefer the more moro succulent mt kinds such as vegetables clover alfalfa and fallen fruit When none of ot these foods are available they often eat the tho bark of ot trees especially when snow covers other food It is very easy to prevent rabbits from tram injuring trees and all cases of damage are due to neglect rather than to a lack of ot efficient remedies Your premises should not afford hiding places for rabbits such as brush piles This is not meant to include green cover crop In the orchard An orchard orchard orchard or- or chard with a cover crop above the snow Is seldom if it ever injured Traps are very effective in catching rabbits The more traps you have the better This is not so economical a method a poisoning for protecting the trees but it furnishes amusement for the children and also provides meat for the table There are two general ways of poisoning poisoning poi pol- rabbits 1 By placing poisoned poisoned poi poi- water in their runs especially during dry weather 2 By placing poisoned food where they can get it The following which was originally recommended by the Ohio station has given satisfaction One part sulphate of strychnine third one part borax one part white soap sap ten parts water Shake well and apply to tender twigs with a n. brush or by dipping and distribute distribute distribute dis dis- tribute tho the poisoned twigs around the trees There have been a number of washes and paints of various kinds recommended recommended mended as being effective against rab rab- bits The disadvantage of ot these washes is that heavy rains wash theta then o off r and make it necessary to repeal repeat the application atlon It is not difficult tc find or dev devise se preparations which will wU keep rabbits away Rabbits Rabbits' are ver very verj particular about their food and an taint on the tree will wUl keep them from I Injuring it The following has been recommended by the Oklahoma station station sta tion and found very satisfactory Water one gallon one pound of soap I two to four ounces of ot carbolic acid Some prefer to add enough vermilion red to give the mixture a good pink color and the consistency of ot cream This is painted on the trunk of at the trees with a brush or swab of rags rage tied to a stick Another wash which has given satisfaction sat is made by slacking one peck of fresh stone lime with soap suds Thin to the consistency oi of whitewash add one half gallon of 01 crude carbolic acid four pounds sulphur sul suI and one gallon of soft soap The United States department of ot agriculture ag ago recommends the lIme wash as giving satisfactory ry results This wash consists of ot lime 20 pounds flowers of sulphur r 15 pounds water 50 gallons The lime sulphur and third one-third of the water are boiled together for one hour and then the rest of ot the water is added By addIng adding add add- ing salt the wash will wUl stick better The Arkansas experiment station has found that painting the trunks oi of the trees with white lead and linseed oil gave very satisfactory results Mixed paints should not be substituted as they may contain oils which would injure the trees One advantage of ot this mixture is that one application is sufficient for the entire season |
