M N o SK C o totO o o o otO T o O O O oto o afo o oto o o ototo o o oJ J f V t I Ii i f fr t r. r e II r Children Color Up This Picture Copyright by McClure Syndi cate Long time ago In the tho late afternoon when hen the boys bOs and girls of the Indian people eople got tired of playing they would sometimes go out where a big tree pread spread Its branches and hold a a. coun- coun dl cil 1 For a time they would carry carryon on the council Just like old people all sitting sit sit- ting ng quiet round the place of the fire and nd only one boy or one girl getting up p to speak at one time But after atter they bad lad been sitting on the ground until they began to get tired three or four tour fourt t f would rise at the same time and all allo f. f o of them would want to speak And Andi i very Tery soon there would be such a shout- shout ling hug that one of the old men would come and say that he would have to tom tomake tomake m make ke himself chief of the council i t But Dut instead of ot sitting as head of the council play the old man would soon i lo bo telling this story of h how w the anImals anI- anI coals mala once lost their power to talk with each each ach other and with man t Before Deore that time all ali of the animals S i and sand all of the people on the earth lived l E happily together Everywhere they went Rent the they could talk with each other i Then the bears and the buffaloes and the wolves began to think that they were better than the other animals because because because be be- cause they were stronger and swifter than the rest and when the animals met in council to talk over where they should go for the Inter er or what kind kindO O of ot food rood they shou lher during the summer these big fellows would always always al aI- al- al ways fays rise up together first and say that they must he heard Who has a better right than I to talk the big bear would ask If It anybody any any- body thinks he ho has let him come and wrestle with me Then the buffalo would get up and say aay If It If you do not listen to what I have to say I will shake down the walls of the council house And And he was so BO big and strong that the animals knew that he ho could do as he said Then the wolf would get up and say In an angry voice If It anybody tries to stop me from talking I will slit silt his throat with my teeth And so It got to such a state slate that no noone noone noone one In all the council could speak There was was' quarreling all the time One da day the quail who was the meSsenger messenger messenger mes meS- from the thunder gods to the animals and the people thought that he be would fly oft off through the suns sun's door In the west and ask the great beaver who had gone to live In the land o of the thunder gods what should be done For a long time the great beaver smoked and studied about what the quail had said and then he got up put his pipe in his pocket and said that he ho would go back with the quail When he came to where the animals were sitting the great beaver told them to go home and come back In ten days So they went home and In ten days when they returned they found that the great beaver had built a wonderful wonderful won won- new council house But the great beaver did not ask all the animals into the new council house at once First the bears all went In In and when they came out the buffalos followed and then the wolves and after that the other animals In turn Nobody could tell what the great beaver had said to them In his his' new council house for tor whenever any animal animal animal ani ani- mal o of one kind tried to talk to an animal antl ani mal of ot another kind he found that he could not make the other one under under- stand And now said the great beaver when he had called them all together there will be no more quarreling at atthe atthe atthe the council And It will be true that you cannot talk with each other until you are once more ready to talk In peace and one at a time |
