M Wilson art 1 28 in his hig Textbook entitled Topographical Surveying The moving moving- Chronometer must be handled with the greatest possible possible ble jle care and the results cannot be e satisfactory where they are carried in wa wagons ons or on the hacks backs of animals They may maybe maybe maye be e carried with Fairly accurate results in the hand however J. J Fair Fairly certainly does not mean very accurate and since it was not necessary that the Uintah Special Meridian be placed at any special place or have its it's longitude determined with the greatest accuracy it stands to reason that the person perRon bringing in the chronometer did not carry it the whole way in his hands All first class textbooks on surveying state that there is but butone butone one accurate method of obtaining the longitude of places and that thatis I the is the method of comparing of-comparing time at the place the longitude of which Is to be determined with the time of some other place the longitude of which is known The method of lunar distances mentioned by Mr Harmston is very inaccurate inthe inthe in inthe the results it gives and is only used in the crudest kind of sur sur- other method he The veys mentioned is not a complete method but is simply a part of the first method and gives the 10 local time at the place of It is true that navigators navigators navi navi- inthe in inthe and explorers gators at sea the wilds obtain longitude but with them the case is different they hev only their x d mate positions and are extremely lucky ducky if they are within a a mile or nr two of the place the observed longitude places them Take th the h case of the navigator who i is iF wringing bringing a ship across the sea if hE le brings bring up within seven miles of his destination he can easily come into port with t the e aid of f landmarks ashore The explorer explorer ex ex- is still more inaccurate as asa asa asi a i rule and and does not try to fix his lis position except Mr Beers' Beers letter has n special rearing bearing on the case lse except to show the land office people have used different longitude at different diff cliff erent times for the Uintah Special Special Spec- Spec ial al Meridian and thus prove that hat there is doubt as to what is the he correct longitude I contend that the Uintah Special Meridian is at least three and one half miles east of the Meridian west of Greenwich Greenwich Greenwich Green Green- and that its it's longitude is about d 56 15 instead of 57 30 This throws the county line along the centre of section 21 and places pi ces the town of I Roosevelt in Uintah County In support of my contention I have before me a copy of the latest map of this section that has been issued b bv by the U S. S Geological cal Survey Marsh Peak sheet and it shows the distance between between between be be- tween the Meridian and the the- Uintah Special Meridian to be 35 miles The location of the Meridian was very accurately accurate accurate- ly made by the survey since it is isa isa isa a principal meridian and was wasu wasI u used cd by them as the boundaries of several of ot the maps recently issued The accuracy of the work of the Geological survey along the line we have been dis- dis cusing is be beyond ond question since they have the two essential things necessary time and plenty plenty plenty plen plen- ty of Their men are trained along along- these special lines and stand high in the en profession A copy of the map referred to and a n statement of its it's accuracy can easily be obtained obtained ob ob- L' L from the Director of the Geological Survey in Washing Washing- ton Respectfully Yours D.
