Show t ELECTED BY POPULAR DEMAND Quite surprising were vere the results of Duchesne's municipal election n Tuesday in the the number of straI straight t ballots cast and in ill the sweeping S victory for the entire e Peoples People's ticket a victory of almost 2 to 1 all the way vay down do the two vo tickets Since there apparently were vere vereno no issues at stake Mormon or non Mormon Democratic Democratic Demo Demo- cratic or Republican Republic business or non-business non th there re reis is only one explanation n of the results those making up the Peoples People's party were vere actually and decidedly the peoples people's choice When public officials g go o in into to office with such overwhelming over majority as was vas given these officials- officials elect at Tuesdays Tuesday's polls there should be no d doubt in their minds as to the support of the electorate Such support is at once a satisfaction and a responsibility Two thirds of the voters of the city have expressed their confidence in the men luen who vho will vill take office n next January Their confidence becomes a sacred trust not to be sacrificed So far as we ve know v few v if any promises were vere made by the successful candidates They were vere elected on the strength of their ability and the belief that this ability wo would ld be used in in the best possible way vay to provide for Duch Duchesne the careful and efficient administration an and d the pr progress ess and improvement improvement im im- im- im provement to which it is entitled Duchesne has every right to expect great things from a city administration put into office under such definite popular demand THE VALUE OF FISH AND GAME The value of the fish and g game core resources of the Basin was vas most forcibly illustrated this week by the great number of hunters coming in in from all directions for the Pheasant hunt It was vas estimated b by y some that hunters came caIne into Duchesne and Uintah counties counties coun coun- ties for one or more days days' of the hunt Hotels tourist apartments private residences were vere taxed to provide accommodations for the visitors and I if the estimated n number umber of hunters is is correct it is safe to say that from to was vas left in in the two VO counties counties' as a result of the five days of sport This is revenue worth considering and demonstrates demonstrates demon demon- strates the ithe value of building and advertising our out game resources not only for the pleasure of local sportsmen but as good business for the communities as well We must realize of course that in the case of the pheasants particularly the game r is s actually supported support support- ed b by Y our farmers farmer s and r ranchers ant er s who Tho receive little tittle if any direct compensation It is only fair then that tat h local sportsmen and businessmen do all in their power ver to respect the rights of the property owners in in pro protecting protecting pro pro- of property an and d during dUling the hunt hurtt and d to to see that visiting sportsmen do likewise like Only through such consideration an and d cooperation can this fine line sport continue to grow v. ARMISTICE E DAY DAY WITH ANEW A NEW NEV MEANING As N November ov mb r 11 approaches and plans f for go o or r- r ward yard fo for the usual observance of Armistice D Day y one cannot help but wonder vonder d just what cause we ve may have to celebrate what significance the day 5 holds hold s for us For twenty venty years Americans have gathered to together together to- to gether on N November vember 11 1 usual usually y under the leadership of ot the American Legion and celebrated the I I ance of the peace which was vas declared 21 years ago ending th the e World War and commemorating those who vho sacrificed iced their lives during this terrible struggle that we ve might have everlasting peace N Now v o as the twenty first anniversary of the event arrives f we ve wonder vonder if we ve should celebrate peace for while our nation is still at peace most of those who vho signed the Versailles treaty are not and it is the opinion opinion opinion ion ion of many that that treaty in itself is the chief reason reason reason rea rea- son why they are not And while we ve cannot help but butCO CO commemorate those who vho sacrificed their lives in the World War we realize at the same time that their sacrifice must have been in vain And s so Armistice stice Day comes to have a new v meaning meaning mean mean- ing mg for us this year ear No longer can we ve placidly 1 and celebrate the peace it stands for the peace we ve find t to be so thin and unstable Rather we ve must turn our thoughts to the future to the building and strengthening of the peace we hold so dear No longer can canve we ve look back with pride and smugness to the accomplishments and victories of and preceding November 11 1918 rather must we ve look back to those days and those immediately preceding and following following follow v ing searching out ont the errors error's in thought and deed and policy in the hopes that we ve may yet correct t them before before before be be- fore ore it is too late and we ve find ourselves again involved involved involved ved in in a struggle likely to become more devastating that the last November is still the anniversary of the World War armistice an and d will ill continue as such but it is now nova also a warning and an admonition that peace is is never permanent unless ess it is kept so Aso o by right thinking right dealing and right action Only by turning our thoughts in this direction and arid by proper reaction to these thoughts thoughts- can canve ti we ve v e make of the Armistice days of the future r r thing but days of poignant regrets I |
