Show READER APPEALS FOR RELIEF ON BUS SITUATION Arcadia Utah July 1937 Dear Editor T The e writer has been informed that at a special meeting of the Duchesne Duchesne Duchesne Du Du- Du- Du chesne county school board held at Roosevelt the evening of July that one W. W C. C Atwood made madea a statement to the effect that he had made a survey among the school patrons of West Arcadia Arcadia Arcadia Ar Ar- cadia and found that 50 per cent of them would rather send their children to Roo Roosevelt evelt than to Duchesne Duchesne Duchesne Du Du- Du- Du I chesne and that Tom Torn Gilbert Gilberti was one of them 1 I want to say to t the he school board and to all whom it may concern that the above statement is false and misleading I did not see Mr Atwood the day he made the survey nor have I at any time expressed myself in any way way I to him on the above mentioned matter or any other school mat mat- ter I challenge Mr Atwood to prove the fact he claims that 50 per cent of our patrons would rather send their cl children to Roosevelt Roosevelt Roosevelt Ro Ro- and under present road conditions to Duchesne Mr Atwood made a check mark markin I in his book and left Perhaps he made the check mark In the wrong column by mistake Personally and aid I believe m most st of the people o of ot the community of Arcadia are of the same opinion opinion opinion ion I i feel that if we had as good roads and could get there and back without subjecting our children children children child child- ren to such long hours that it would make very little difference wether we went to Roosevelt or Duchesne as the distance would be practically the same But un- un th time we are arc heartily opposed to going to Roosevelt Should Consider Children Another thing that burns us up under the present system is the fade fadL that our school bu bus has to leave here In time to put the high l fh school students in Roosevelt Roosevelt Roosevelt Ro Ro- by 9 00 in the morning which means that the elementary students are dumped off at Myton Myton Myton My- My ton before the time they should be there At night they must wait walt for the bus to come com from Roosevel after school has been dismissed in the afternoon This makes hours too long and tiring for young children and their I health and grades in school suffer suffer suffer suf suf- fer We Ve also earnestly I object to having o our r children separated sep sep- into two different schools 1 As far as the writer has been able to learn learn each county superintendent superintendent super super- int who has gone into our problem during the last several years has recommended the change in the bus route be made to Duchesne Duchesne Du- Du chesne for West Arcadia and 1 I have been told that Roosevelt citizens have accused Duchesne of promoting the change I have been in this this' fight from the start and at no time has Duchesne come and offered assistance without without without with with- out our first asking for it In fact at times we have felt that they were not greatly interested in having our children in their schools because of the lack of inter interest st manifested in our lem I Would Eliminate OI e Teacher We Ve have plead our case before the school board for l the thelast thelast c last five years but each time we have asked for bread they have given us a rock We feel that our cause is just and that we should be given relief from the oppression oppression oppression sion under which we have lived I am speaking for as aswell aswell aswell well as Arcadia in this matter I understand there was a difference difference difference dif dif- dif dif- ference of per month inthe in inthe inthe the bids submitted ted in favor of the routes to Myton Dayton and Roosevelt Roose Roose- velt At the same time would not the change eliminate one teachers teacher's teachers teacher's teachers teacher's teach teach- ers er's salary at My Myton ton I understood understood understood under under- stood both our present and past superintendents have stated stalled that this would be true and that addition addition addition ad ad- of another teacher Ito to take care of the load at Duchesne would not be necessary Even should this not b be be- bethe the case it seems that the school board is not able to figure in the terms of health and safety of little children When these items are being considered in the bal bal- balI I ance against the a month saving in cash the decision is in favor of the cash So it appears that in spite spit 01 ol all we can do or say we victims of the system that we must continue continue continue con con- to be dangled in the streams of life Ufe as a Bait for Myton 1 and ami Roosevelt This seems to be our destiny Signed Thomas M.
