Show Quick Sand Causes j Unexpected Trouble In New Water Vater Works The filter bed at atthe the head of ot the new water works system was temporarily abandoned this week and water is now coming from the reservoir on Blue Bench The change was made necessary because because be be- cause of the inability of the filter bed to handle the large amount of quick sand now being carried by the water in the Duchesne In spite of a bed of gravel from 18 inches to 2 feet deep covering the drain tile intake pipes at the head of the system it was found Sunday that quick sand was filtering filtering fil Ill through carrying with it quantities of trash etc which has been caus causing g tr trouble b e for the p past t two water from num the tu Blue Bench reservoir was turned into the lines Monday and will willbe willbe willbe be used until a solution to the filter bed problem can be worked out The filter bed was installed last I fall through a WP WA A project which included a long extension of new pipe leading up the river North of Duchesne For quite a awhile awhile awhile while after the system was first Installed it seemed to be working perfectly delivering a plentiful supply of clear water and citizens citi citi- zens ens were sure u e they thel had a at last louna Iouna a or cu our I water ater supply problems Trouble began in January when 43 degrees below zero temperature froze the filter bed solid shutting off the supply Trouble In Filter BeJTo Bed BeJ To allow water to enter the pipes an opening was made di directly directly dl- dl into the head This was closed this spring after the frost left the bed but before the silt which had washed into the system system tem tern while it was open could be washed out the quick sand began filtering in Just what the final inal solution willbe willbe will willbe be has not yet been worked out WP A and other have been consulted but none seems tobe to tobe tobe be able to offer much help City Councilmen A. A J. J Orr and C. C H. H Selch Seich who have spent much time on the problem are continuing their investigations however in inthe inthe inthe the hopes of soon being able to meet the difficulty While it appears evident that the system as now installed will not work satisfactorily there is really little investment which will have to be lost The new line extending extending ex ex- tending up the river is giving no trouble and will serve its purpose purpose purpose pur pur- pose in whatever system is finally I adopted The trouble is in the filter fil Ill ter tel bed entirely Several changes have been suggested which may eliminate the difficulty and these will probably be experimented with if some known and proven method is not found |
