The Annual Non-Sto- p Flight LET US RESOLVE There will be all sorts of New Years resolutions made today. We will resolve to this and not to do that, resolutions affecting many different things. We hear a lot about such resolutions on New Years Day. Some of them we forget before the day is done and others we remember and try to keep throughout the year, succeeding or not according to how much we favor the resolutions and how weak or strong our determination to keep them. A resolution we can all make, and one which should not be too hard to keep, is the resolution to adopt and foster a more neighborly feeling among the towns in the Uintah basin and particularly in Duchesne county. Coming more directly to the point, there has been present during the past a feeling of jealousy and antagonism between Duchesne and Roosevelt which is anything but inspiring and inductive to progression. To explain the situation is perhaps not hard. The two principal cities of the county are fairly well balanced as to population, Roosevelt being somewhat the larger. Duchesne, though smaller in population enjoys a central location, both as to population and geography and was consequently chosen as county seat when the county was first formed. Roosevelt on the other hand is surrounded with lands more easily cultivated and with more accessible water and consequently took the lead in business. There we find located the only surviving bank in the county and the largest mercantile establishments. Each then, has something the other would like to have, hence much of the reason for jealousy and antagonism, but is it a justifiable reason? Community pride and the stimulus of progressive rivalry should exist jn every town which hopes to grow, but these can exist and still not destroy friendship which is also necessary between neighboring cities with common problems to be solved such as exist in Duchesne county. Since any community is only an assembled group of individuals the problem is after all an individual one and can be easily solved with individual resolutions. The individual can resolve to put forth all effort to further his own business or profession and still maintain a friendly attitude with his neighbor, joining him in a common effort for the good of his community. Similarly he can resolve as a unit of his community to further the interests of that community again maintaining a friendly community attitude toward neighboring towns for the good of the county or section. On this principle our nation was founded and on it it has progressed, and likewise on this principle can the Uintah basin build and progress for a happier and prosperous New Year. PREPARING FOR THE 1937 BOOM:- The New Year, to almost every business institution, means an inventory of merchandise or goods on hand and a check-u- p of the past years business, to see whether there have been losses or gains and to plan activities for the coming year. Such an inventory would undoubtedly be a fine thing for all of us, for after all we are all businessmen of a sort, engaged in the business of living and of providing in one way or another a livelihood for our families. In looking back over 1936 we find a fine improvement over previous years in almost all general conditions. Money has been much more plentiful in all channels of business and industry. Individual incomes have increased for both the laborer and the farmer. Even the share and bond holders have received increased dividends and in many instances dividends where none at all had been forthcoming for many years. The depression, according to our inventory apparently gave up its strangle hold during 1936, and we find, rather than advise as to how recovery may be attained that our leading columnists are now of- - January, 1937, at the Front Door of the Courthouse in Duchesne.
