M Dunn Professor of or I Forestry Fore Utah State Agricultural College n The Russian olive is hardy Asiatic tree that has been introduced to the United States fairly recently for planting under rather extreme conditions It is a low- low growing ving tree with a tendency to branch out The leaves are a grayish green narrow and somewhat like the willow The branches are thorny and the wood is strong and dark brown in appearance The fruit isa is isa isa a whitish fleshy berry especially desired ed by the songbirds quail and aud pheasants I I The olive is extremely hardy I being able to adapt itself to either wet or dry sites and to good or poor soils up to about feet in elevation In Utah it has made very good growth in some some- extreme alkali situations Its branchy growth conforms particularly well to windbreak or hedge plantings It is recommended for the outside I row of a planting with the Siberian Siberian Siberian Siber Siber- ian elm being used on the inside I TOW row By proper pruning this olive will make a desirable tree reaching up to a maximum of 60 50 feet in inh h height ight The wood is heavy hard and durable possibly making fence posts and other farm prod prod- |
