Show Would V Seem This Horse Used His Think Tank On the farm we once had hall a horse that developed the habit of getting out of the stable unassisted After having haying been tied tlell securely to the manger mangel with a n halter strap and with the stable door latched he would fl free e himself and later we would find Ond him prowling n about out the yard jard ard with the halter strap dangling loose from the halter This occurred several times One day I decided to find Ond out how he accomplished this feat ConcealIng Concealing Concealing Conceal Conceal- ing myself in the stable I 1 watched long and patiently but to no avail He lie was a n s sly old rogue an and never attempted to free himself while I Iwas Iwas Iwas was there probably havIng hating sensed my presence In the stable I tried again This time 1 I stealthIly stealthily stealth stealth- ily approached the stable from rom the outside and peered through a crack crad We usually tied the halter strap ina In Ina Ina a half knot bowknot leaving the end of the strap hanging loose Before BeCore long I saw the horse seize the end of the strap with his teeth and pull out the loop Thus free he walked around to the stable door where he lie fumbled with the latch until until until un un- til he lie slid It back then walked out Unknown to us he had hind probably watched ed us tie tic and untie the strap many times as well as latch and unlatch unlatch un un- un latch the tile door dOOl And while such things as knots and latches present no no problem to the human mind they are arc so decidedly outside the time province of a n horses horse's mind that It seemed a n abit abit bit of clever er equestrian thinking on his part to be able to extricate himself himself him hm- self unassisted R.
