Ray Hillman appointed County Attorney Duchesne Co. Board Of Education Meets The Duchesne County Board of Education held its monthly meeting Tuesday, April 2nd. It was anticipated that an 8 months term will be completed for the elementary grades and 8 54 months term for the high schools of the county. This will make the closing dates May 3rd and May 24 th respectively. The Board authorizes the purchase of 200 feet of tile for the septic tank drainage field at the Duchesne school. It is expected that this additional tile will take care of the water that has been backing up in the pipes and causing so much trouble in the plumbing system. The school Janitors convention will be held in Salt Lake City June 10th to 15th this year and the Board hopes to be able to provide for the attendance of janitors from the four principal schools in this district, namely Duchesne, Roosevelt, Mt. Emmons and Neola. The chief purpose of these conventions is to provide instruction to janitors in the care of buildings, heating and plumbing systems, and the general duties connected with therr positions. The Board was notified by the Talmage school that they had raised funds to the extent of $30 for library books. The Board appropriated $30 and authorized the purchase of $60 worth of books for the Talmage school library. Authority was given for tlic use of Duchesne District school buildings for kindergarten work during the summer months. The Duchesne High School domestic science department served a delicious luncheon- to the members of the School Board at noon. - ir-ati- 3 3G County Commissioners Hold Monthly Meeting iponmyst la quite I'd $2.00 SHERIFF MITCHELL ARRESTS FUGITIVE Sheriff Arzy II. Mitchell won another feather for his cap last Friday when he apprehended William Kenneth McComas, who had escaped from the U. S. Marshall in Salt Lake City. McComas was being held under a Dyer act charge in Sait Lake when he made his escape. Sheriff Mitchell had been notified of the mans escape, and that he was thought to be in the Basin. Receiving information that he might be in Roosevelt, Mitchell concentrated on that point, and with the assistance of Ren Johnson, Roosevelt's city marshall, made the ar- rest there Friday afternoon, after a short but thrilling chase, Officers H. W. Clark and A. C. Randall of the Salt Lake police department who were in Duchesne Saturday morning on other stolen car matters. Identified the 1935 Plymouth sedan in McComas possession as another stolen car from Salt Lake. The returned to Salt Lake Saturday afternoon, taking the prisoner and the stolen car with them. Stolen Truck Found Hy Salt Lake Police The truck, owned by Mr. J, A. Moxley, which was stolen in last Wednesday, was recovered by Salt Lake Police officers Friday and returned to the owner. No clue as to the identity or whereabouts of the thief has as yet been discovered. Mr. Moxley, who hauls freight from Salt Lake City to the Iiasin, stated that he had parked his empty truck on a street in while he was transacting business in one of the business houses there. When he returned in about 10 minutes, the trurk was gone. He at once notified the police, but it wasn't until Friday that any trace of it was found. The truck was discovered in an alley in Murray, where it had been run into a ditch, damaging the fenders and springing the front axel. The thief escaped with tools and personal belongings among which was a 44 Colt pistol, which were contained in a suitcase. The suitcase had been thrown back into the truck. Damages to the truck were at $100 00 which were covei ed by insurance, the owner Sug-arhou- Sug-arhou- stated. Timber project Submitted The FERA timber project which was to provide for 250,000 feet of lumber at $20.00 per thousand, out of the Uintah Forest, for the purpose of building bridges in Du- chesne County was discussed with W. R. Weyman, FERA engineer. The Commissioners had discussed this project with R. H. Raeburn, Director of Works Division, in Salt Lake City, six weeks ago and at that time, were given the Impression that the project would When it was later be approved. submitted, however it was disapproved. Mr, Weyman promised to submit it personally again and explain it more fully. County (Jen. Slum a Deficit The county general fund shows a debt of $70,606.49. This amount has been borrowed from various funds, namely, County Highway, Poor and Indigent, Exhibition and DeSinking fund, Advertising, pendent Mothers, Old Age Pension, Widows Pension and State Road. It is hoped that enough delinquent taxes will be collected this year to pay back this money. County Attorney Named The Board adjourned at 3 a. m. Wednesday to meet again Wednesday afternoon in Roosevelt. It was announced that Ray E. Dill-ma- n of Itoosevcft was appointed County Attorney to fill the vacancy left by the death of Charles Schwenke. A Hundred Chickens For Boxing Dinner A hundred of the basins beat chickens are being fattened for the big boxing and dancing event to be staged at Vernal next Wednesday to raise funds for the ward hall, according to the committee in charge. The chicken dinner, the first event of the evening will be served in the Vernal community house. Extra seats are being prepared in the high school building to try to take care of the enormous crowds that are expected to be present. The- dance following the matches wil be the greatest or the season it is elaimd. The Indians are preparing to go in a group, the committee has been advised, as the dancing girls are something new for the Basin and are among the best In Salt Lake. Tickets are being sold not only to men, but to their wives and daughters, forecasting an unusual attendance of ladies at an event of this kind, and the committee is already fearful that many of those who do not purchase tickets in advance, or come early will be left without seats. The 1935 figure is preliminary and subject to correction. The number of farms in Uintah County, as shown by this preliminary count is 1,385, ns compared with 1.076 on April 1, 1930. |
