Honor Both Blue and Gray GrayY Y As Memorial day hk Vic ve prepare to observe the beautiful custom long since established of re remembering re- re the heroic dead it is is in interesting in 4 to read the account given by a leading newspaper of the in inauguration in- in of that custom In an editorial written in 1877 we read Preparations for observing Decoration day were carried in this year upon a far more extensive scale than ever before For three or four years attempts have been 1 made to effect a co operation co-operation operation be between i t- t tween the survivors survivors of the Federal k and the Confederate armies and to Insure an equal honor to the remains of the deceased Northern and Southern South South- era ern sailors This year for the first time in history the veterans of both armies will march together through the streets to strew with flowers the graves of those who perished in the great war Wan Such an event marks a new epoch It is the apotheosis of the revived feeling of brotherhood brother brother- hood There has been a great deal of oratory on this subject and some charming verses have been written but now the banner of fraternity is flung to the breeze without hesitation and with faith in public approval The Blue and the Gray clasp hands above the tomb of their fallen braves and in the great future of this reunited country there is to be no resurrection resurrection of sectional feuds feuds' and dead and buried bitterness The past is forgot n and the country's future is everything This is la lathe the lesson and the era of reconciliation
