WHY KNOCK THE SCHOOLS? It's passing strange how tho dally nowspapers of Salt Lake City take especial delight In knocking the city and its institutions. A striking example ex-ample of this was seen in the Salt Lake Herald a few days ago In a report re-port of an examination of pupils of tho public schools In tho art of spell ng. "Not one perfect in spelling," cr'es the Herald In big head lines nnd taking that as the keynote the writer of the article brings out prominently not only mistakes made by the pupil? In spelling, but manufactures mistakes, and carefully avoids giving credit for things that aro creditable. Why the Herald or any other paper should take especial pains to so misrepresent tho Salt Lake City schools and do injustice injus-tice to tho pupils, wound their feelings feel-ings and the feelings of their friends and that at tho expense of justice is one of those things that "no fellow can find out." "Not ono perfect In spelling," spell-ing," screams tho Herald, in its big head lines. Is there anybody perfect in spelling? If there Is he or she has no connection with tho Herald office judging by tho spelling as it appears in that sheet. That may bo ono reason rea-son why the Herald Is so' anxious to make it appear that spelling is neglected neg-lected In tho public schools of th city, which, however, is not the fact The Salt Lake city schooh nra above tho average, a long way abovo tha average of schools generally In the country. Three hundred and forty-nine 8th grade pupils of the Salt l.nko Citv schools were examined In spelling Their average marks wero 53 per cent. In Springfield, 111., 200 8th grado pupils showed 51.2 per cent average av-erage marks; ono hundred In Elgin Illinois, tho percentage was 52.2 In spelling, and so it goes all over. Salt Lake Is "full high advanced" in the matter of Its schools. Tho croakers tolls us that in the days of old spelling was much more perfect than it Is now. Now In 184G nt tho Springfield, Mass., high school, in a spelling contest tho Identical words given in tho high school contest con-test a few days ago wero given. TIip average percentago of excellence or perfection, as you may choose to ctV it, scored by tho Springfield pupils was 40.G, while the Salt Lake boys and girls a fow days ago on the samo words scored an average percentago per-centago of 82 1-9. Not much in tho na-turo na-turo of deterioration nbout that. Tho following aro tho words glvon in tho high school test: Accidental, accessible, baptism, chi rograph. deceitfully, descendant, eccentric, eccen-tric, evanescent, fierceness, folgnedly, ghastllness, gnawed, heiress, hysteric. Imbecility, Inconceivable, Inconvenient, Inconveni-ent, Inefficient, irresistible. About four years ago, If wo remember remem-ber rightly, Superintendent Christen-sen Christen-sen Inaugurated a plan for moro thorough thor-ough Instructions In what is known as tho three r's, Or tho fundamentals. The merits of this plan can hardly yet bo definitely passed upon as none of tho pupils have yet completed the course, henco tho folly of crlticlzin.? results before they arc obtained. Utah stands third in tho whole United States In tho matter of education. educa-tion. At tho World's fair at St. Louis, a world wide competitive exposition, Salt Lake City schools took tho gold mednl In tho educational department and tho samo tiling happened at tho exposition at Portland last year. Most states would be proud of such things and tho novspapor3 would gloat over them, but it's not so with tho newspapers news-papers hero. Thoy would rather knock than boost, because "it is their nnture to." Probate and Guardianship Notices. Consult County Clork or respective signers for further Information.)
