Show u THE STATE BOARDS. Truth hns all along been of the opinion that legislation for tho purpose pur-pose of placing certain state boards which aro now non-partisan on a strictly partisan basis would bo a mis-tnko mis-tnko nnd It thinks so still. The most of those state boards havo such duties du-ties nnd functions as Interest all the peoplo and minorities aro entitled to representation. The law so arranging it was a wlso ono and wo see no adequate ade-quate reason for chancing It. Al though the Republicans aro in a big majority now they should remember that It will not be always so. A tlmo may come when tho Democrats may bo in tho majority and tho Republican minority would then probably think, and rightly so, that It was entitled to representation on those boards. Another reason why legislation of that kind ought not to bo pushed at this tlmo Is that there Is a strong feeling, feel-ing, right or wrong, that there Is a concerted action by a clique to push this proposed measure for the purpose of getting rid of friends of ex-Governor Wells who aro members of a number of tho state boards. Wo don't think thero is much in this, but a great many peoplo do and it would bo a political mistake to antagonize a largo and influential section of tho Republican Republi-can party, which has great respect for and confidence In the ex-govorno Tho lesson of tho last city election should not be forgotten. Republicans bolted then nnd they might do so again. |
