Show The writer of the latter letter, according to the books, received the paper regularly but never paid for it. He seemed to have enjoyed it in the past but suddenly had taken a serious aversion to the con-tents con-tents of the paper. (Of course we would not presume to say it was on account of his being asked to pay the balance due.) It is on ac-count ac-count of receiving a number of these letters that we express ourselves more explicitly as to the objects, aims, policies and practices of this paper. 4 Our first ambition and allegiance is to the people of this great Rocky Mountain country. Wc love this country, we love its people, we are proud of its history, proud of its achievements. We glory in its future prospects, we are delighted with its brilliant possibilities. This is the greatest country in the world, there is no richer country nor one with a more alluring future prospect than this great Rocky Mountain territory. Wc believe in its people, wc think there is as much manhood, as much virtue, as much goodness, as much ability and as much honesty among the people inhabiting these Rocky Mountain States as is to be found among any people gracing the foot-stool of God. That there are imperfections among the people ; that faults have been committed, that mistakes have been made ; that wrongs have been perpetrated we do not question, but we do most emphatically insist that this country and the inhabitants of the country are as free from error and have made as few mistakes and failures as any other community or commu-nities commu-nities that authentic history bears record of. This paper will never hesitate to fearlessly and vigorously assail any iniquity, wrong doing or corruption that may exist, but at the same time we shall insist that our main and chief duty is to find the good, the beautiful and the lovely features of this country and its peo-pic peo-pic and exploit and extol those things publicly. We are not pessimists, we are optimists, we are for the develop-mcnt, develop-mcnt, the progress and the up-building of this magnificent land and if there be those among our subscribers who think the chief value of a publication is centered in its ability to exploit the private frailties, faults and corruptions "f various individuals, then we advise them now, once and for all, lat we differ with them and that the chief functions of this paper . 'ill be to exploit the resources both material and otherwise of this western country. We will strive to advance the development and the up-building of the country and its people, we will endeavor to find the good things, the beautiful things and the things that will appeal to the better tastes and instincts of mankind, that are found here, and those things will we talk about and proclaim. Once more we will say that where there is a public crime committed, com-mitted, where there exists malfeasance in office, where there exists corruption in men or parties, that will prove injurious to the best interests in-terests of the people, we shall vigorously assail and wage war against these iniquities no matter where found, whether in low or high places, but our chief mission is to boost everlastingly for this country and its people, because with all the imperfections or unpleasant situations, the abnormal or subnormal conditions we still believe that for every vice and for every evil that can be pointed out we can point out ten thousand thous-and virtues. Then finally our mission is to boost. ik |
