Show SPORTING GOSSIP. This is the last week of the first season in the Salt Lake Bowling League. The second scries of games will begin immediately after the holidays, holi-days, and at the conclusion of the second sec-ond scries a post scries of games will be played between the stronger teams. The Hanes Colts arc the winners of the opening series, and confidently expect to capture the honors again, thus preventing a post series. The annual six-day bicycle race at New York City was finished Saturday night, December 14, the result being as follows: Rutt and Stol, 2,312 mile;), 5 laps (first). Fogler and Moran, 2,312 miles, 5 laps (second). Georgct and Dupre, 2,312 miles, 4 laps (third). Downing and Downey, 2,312 miles, 4 laps (fourth). Galvin and Wiley, 2,312 miles, 4 laps (fifth). Krebs and Vandcrstuyft, 2,312 miles, 3 laps (sixth). Logan and Bardgett, 2,312 miles, 3 laps (seventh). Breton and Vanoni, 2,312 miles, 1 lap (eighth). The record is 2,733 miles, 4 laps, made by Miller and Waller in 1899. Last year's mark was 2,292 miles, 2 laps. Urb MacDonald, who was fatlly injured in-jured as the result of a collision in the New York six-day race, was well known in Salt Lake, and was one of the popular riders at the saucer track. MacDonald was 22 years of age, and had a promising future. Of all the Salt Lake riders who started in the six-day bike race in New York City, Hardy Downing was the only one to finish, securing fourth place, losing third place in the final sprint by half a wheel's length. Last year Downing finished second. Lawson was forced out of the race by the unfortunate accident in which his partner, McDonald McDon-ald was fatally injured, and Samuel-son Samuel-son and the other Utah boys quit early in the game. |
