Show important history an important matter of local history has been brought to light by john A bevan and philip I 1 P delamare two of our oldest living livina pioneers in regards to an old cemetery used by the first settlers in tooele from 1849 to 1867 when the location was changed to the present place the old cemetery was located on the stockton road just south of the mill ditch the late john It Il eggles mother was the first woman buried in the old cemetery and Willi william arn E gollaher the first mayor of tooele thoele was the first man man to tb be buried there the first young persan was mary larsen a sister to mrs hannah england A number of bodies were moved at the time the location was changed but some thirty or forty people can still be accounted for who were not moved but whose remains are still in the old location with nothing to mark their whereabouts in fact mr delamare declares that the stockton road now runs over some of the graves in bringing this matter to light the daughters of the pioneers have taken an interest and issued the following notice TO THE EARLY varly PIONE PIONEERS ERS or OF TOOELE CITY PLEASE TAKE NOTICE there here is a amov movement ement on foot to erect a suitable Fui suitable table monument to the memory of those who died and ware were buried we called the old grave grace yard near the mouth of settlement canyon those who died between the years 1849 and 1867 prid and whose bodies were nol and moved to what we call the now new cemetery there are afo probably between thirty and f fifty if ty of our early dead whose remains are 1111 still IIII there ther and 1 I ri no mark 1 to show where they are therefore we would request all who have friends or relatives there to forward their names and any information regarding garding Te the matter to the daughters of the pioneers of city utah and oblige deseret gowans gowana secretary |
