Show prize itrice E essay asay UTAH AND EDUCATION BY HILLARY ST CLAIR editors editor note tho the following essay on education in utah was written by gillary st clair of the tooele thoele high school ile ho was awarded first prize in a contest held at tho the school last week hanks hicks evans evana offered a fountain pen to the winner we are living in an age of wonderful development and change chang e our chiv is more com alexi illiteracy has decreased and lit has increased marvelous Marv clous a chiev ments of science and industry are manifest evidences of intellectual progress because of such dauid adva advancement in irv knowledge and such high standards of civilization our public schools are inevitably a great necessity wo we owe a broad education to our posterity tho the future citizens of america the ile greatest obligation that any generation owes is the obligation it owes to the next generation that obligation we discharge through the function of education every utah citizen should bo be proud of our educational record we have gone forward in the field of education in great strides during the last two decades utah is one of the states that has baa providing efficient schools for her citizens of tomorrow she has a 76 per cent efficiency in ill providing school and has secured the honorable position of third place in comparison with other states utah is one of th the states estates that have realized the harm that comes through idle young citizens and has madean made an efficient attempt to compell them to go to school now only percent of her children between 7 and 13 years of age are not net in school and only three other states have bettered her record not only has utah provided schools for her young citizens but she has also contributed much huchto to the effi efficiency clen of her schools sixty nine per cent of her teachers are normal graduates this record p avs her ninth place ranked with her sister states seventy eight per cent of our teachers have had at least two years experience peri ence the states with better records cords are arizona with deper cent rhode island with 84 per cent and maryland with 83 per cent utah spends per pupil on an average and ranks seventeenth place with her sister states in this respect silo she also gives the pupils 1664 days of school each year on an average in this respect ranking twenty fourth place the results of our expense and progress in education is a reduction of illiteracy and an increase in mental efficiency only billy 19 per cent of citizens ten years and over are illiterate iowa betters us with only 19 per cent only per cent of our native born citizens over ten years of age are illiterate giving us rank of fourth place in public school efficiency she ranks eleventh place in education attainment site she ranks fifth and in information in national questions ninth place in comparison compares n with other states thus we see rank with her sister states in establishing and bettering her public schools and their results utah people know that ad vanc ment of american education is the greatest of patriotic services they can render and upon that knowledge they take action utah has done much for american education but shotwill she ShO will do more |
