Show missionary LETTER portland maine may 1 tooele thoele transcript 1 DEAR EDITOR you no doubt think that you have nave a very neglectful subs subscriber cribei here in the now new england states stated and I 1 hardly blume blame you for it seems the only time I 1 write to you is when I 1 change addres addresses sei so that I 1 can get the paper without delay for we missionaries anxiously await for our home paper to reach us so that wo we can hear of the happenings at homo home and you can rest assured that every line is read with much in interest as we are all much inter ested in our home towns and an d their people I 1 still hold Too thoele tooele eleas as my home and its people as my people of which I 1 am indeed thankful for the ledge of being born and raised ra ased among I 1 also get many thoughts and ideas from the paper which help me a great deal in my labors as a missionary as I 1 have collected collect eA a number of the poems and other readings which I 1 have used to good advantage in my labors such poems as play ball Balf it games fish swim up stream and a number of other clipping ahl which ch were similar to the article which came out in the april 29 issue assue which I 1 was very much in imi J pressed with that of A clean clea up decalogue which we all e know can well be put into pra tice the world over for next godliness come cleanliness I 1 have labored in the city aty of 5 providence R jt bor for sixteen months and during my stay there I 1 had hadtke the opportunity of getting well acquainted with the conditions and while the greater part of the city was vas well kept and they can well be proud of their city as aa a whole yet wo we found certain sections of the city where the conditions was a disgrace to any city because of the rubbish which was wag allowed to accumulate in the streets while I 1 was going through the city of boston I 1 found in the poorer sections of the city the same condition in one ittle alley in particular I 1 paused to watch a number of half clothed anti and apparently half fed children playing in tho the narrow dark alley where the sun never gets a chance to shine on account of the narrow passage and the high buildings and the tha ground was litte rally covered with all kinds of rubbish including 0 old id cans and broken glass these are the signs which are an eye sore to the cities because it shows neglect to the extent that they over look 1001 the little corners w which aich breed filth how like a city is to a farm where the farmer just weeds the prin principal cival part of his farm and leaves the re bainder to produce tile the weeda weed 8 for his is next years worries and labors while if he had gotten into the corners and over reached his own possessions and cleaned the streets of the noxious weeds he would hay have 0 saved hemf l lf a good deal 0 of jira extra labor the following year so a good prosper prosperous oui city like a good prosperous prospero tm farmer get into these corners and clean them out now I 1 am not saying that providence and boston is not I 1 good thrifty and industrious cities because they are and the united states can well ba proud of them I 1 have only been in portland maine two weeks BO so I 1 havel met many of the people here as yet but the surrounding country is is a most beautiful sight particularly the rough and rock bound coast of maine which lives up to its name a sight which will long be remembered the whole of the new england states are quite heavily wooded with chielli the following trece white pine white birch su sugar ar maple and chest nut along with many varieties of fruit bearing trees and vines as the wild cherries grapes blue berries strawberries raspberries rasp berries and quite a number of other kinds which yield abundantly and a great many of the people depend entirely upon the wild fruit for their jellies and jams the state of maine i is s tile the chief state for n agriculture ari culture of new england the main crop being potatoes and hay while the other new england states are noted for their great manufacturing establishments such as the woollen cotton and silk mills the shoe indu industry stry and many foundries where they finish all kinds of machinery tools and implements the city of portland has a population of and the iho principle resources are the shipping industry as it is a sea port city and fishing seems to follow it closely I 1 will close by thanking you along with my many other f friends in tooele for tho the many kind and thoughtful deeds shown to me during my association with you and hoping that this year will bring peace and plenty to you all are the wishes which I 1 send from Port portland lando me Sine Sin erly cerly youri youa PETER |
