Show AUTHER AETHER fw FIRE ON OH THE DROUBAY BLOCK leaves only part of the opal saloon standing and that has been empty for somo some months just a little before I 1 wednesday baym morning orning the cry ot of fire and the zong of the fire bell brought a rush of many people on to the street to find out whit what was the matter it was soon dincov discovered ered that the droubay block was agali ag ala th the scene escene of burning belh buildings I 1 and so quick hadtke had the fire spread that there could be no doubt but it was the work of the firebug fire bug the dwelling house the saloons and the trees were all on fire at once a spread of fire that no live coal a lighted match or a cigarette could have started in such a short time the firemen were soon on hand but for the lack of water they were powerless in a making any progress in stopping the wrath of the burning flames when the hose was attached and the water 4 turned on there was scarce enough water to fill the hose for a time and still the city pays the water company a year for a supply of 0 water and the company takes the money and thanks the lord for the check cheeky but the firemen has to do the best they can without the water the city better tear out the fire hydrants and spend I 1 th money in digging a few cisterns that might supply a bucket brigade for aa hour or two and help to save some property only part of the opal saloon was saved the two story dwelling house two saloons a cafe and a barber shop went up in smoke and it took less daura 1 hours tobbin than P WW swe cannot say I 1 a ss but t we judge tot ft do not know the amount of insurance that was on the buildings as the figures hive have not yet been totaled up but the loss was complete |
