Show orto by A T roberts chronicle sports editor V VA A ra A y white assard aird at work preparing for 1948 grid bics season when coach johnny puan k called the role at tooele thoele s f foot ball practice a total of 30 husky grinders grid ders answered his call and im mediately plunged into the astren bous two a day workouts coach is enthus aftic about ab out the large and eager group but knows that the time is short and the shoes of the boys that grad bated last spring will be hard to to fill gone from last year s first string eleven that finished second in the jordan league are such stand outs as charlie lee all state half back dael leatham brilliant quarterback all state howard rock wall and tubby guards fay mcfarland and kent cahoon tackles and gordon bu bunn nn center the entire ine 1 ne from tackle to tackle will have to be rebuilt and half of the back field will have to be reconstructed that a large order for any coach and espee lally so when is using the cimpl bated T formation and has but ten days to mold together a smooth working eleven SEVEN ON SQUAD but all is not black at the buff campus as seven members of the squad are returning lettermen head ng the list are col captains glen bones hamilton and chuck gillespie with larry stevenson karl swan loren dunn glen the horse rupp and timmer mcken drick all slated for starting roles and it its s a good bet that at the opening kickoff tooele thoele will be just as rough and rugged as ever and the eleven starters will be a well oiled grid machine will build his back field around co captain chuck gilles pie a senio semo r and timmer me mc ken drick a junior both boys were regulars last year and even though they were overshadowed by lee and Leat leatham harn they were integral and vital cogs in every tooele thoele game both these boys have played a full year under and are familiar with the intricate work ings of the T and should blossom out into full fledged stars of the gridiron chubby who showed bril last year before injuries slowed him down is back and will no doubt see plenty of action gor don fitzwater and clel clef lee are also putting up a stiff argument as to who will be the starters JIM BEVAN AT quarterback slated for quarterback when the opening whistle sounds is raven haired jim bevan bevan had to take a back seat to dale Leat leatham harn last year not because he lacked abil ty but more because he was only a sophomore however jim will get his chance this f fall all and with the experience he gained last year bevan is expected to be a quarterback of top rating he will probably do most of the passing for the purple and white and with such ng ends as hamilton and dunn as targets should be come the terror of the league jim suffered a knee injury last week and it isn t known whether or not the weakened joint aint will c carry arry him through the tough grind ahead if not a f ery little red head dan griffith can move over and there is even a possibility that chubby will be switched to the quarterback spot STEVENSON IN NEW POSITION larry stevenson who alternated at center last fall has been moved to fullback where everyone ex pacts him to be a sensation ste venson is a natural and would make any coach s eyes light up with enthusiasm willingness to learn and his raw ability to toab ab all the information and hard knocks thrown his way big and tough larry make an ideal fullback big things are expected of this boy and the rooters for the buffs will be very disappointed if bg larry doesn doean t deliver the goods ranked right behind stevenson is another rough and willing foot bailer baller in the person of doug baum during early season practice there wasn gasn t a harder working more vi cious kid on the squad than baum and he can and will step in at full back in a moment moments s notice HAMILTON AND DUNN ENDS on the flanks will be two re turning lettermen co capt glen bones hamilton at left end and loren dunn on the right side of the line when you say hamilton you have said just about all there is to say about ends lil ol 01 bones earned unanimous all state honors last year and he is bigger faster and smarter this season and baning injuries should be better than ever before the additional cespon sivility lity of being co captin wont won t hamper the play of bones and you can be assured that hamilton will be a marked man every game eight returning lettermen Letterii ien will bolster grid slopes hopes al IF V t W e 1 W 14 v aa 4 aw 4 A 1 W I 1 N 1 1 4 rt A N 0 13 W 4 9 A v 4 q ar I 1 11 4 rt belr w 1 14 f g ian 1 73 i or 01 j ta na W williams on the other end of the line is loren dunn and right end is another spot won it have to worry about dunn is tall rangy aid and fairly fast and gives tooele thoele a pair of ends that will cause every team in the league plenty of trouble while bringing plenty of thrills to D ck ek harvey joe martin and D ck erickson more ends will be anxiously sitting on the side I 1 nes will ng and capable of digging their cleats into the turf for dear old toodie tooele TOUGH TACKLES two big rugged boys glen rupp and karl swan are almost a cinch to get the starting roles at tackle both are lettermen and even tho rupp was at end last year he is expected to make the switch to tackle with no trouble and if he so desires he can be the best tackle in the league and perhaps the state the biggest boy on the squad rupp is fast and powerful and when he hits a man that man knows that he has been hit swan is another boy that plays the game for keeps hard charging big and rugged enough to open up a hole big enough to drive a backs will be taking ad vantage of this thi 1 s swan kid up there on the forward wall floyd sh elds dan freebairn dick gillette jack smart john kantrales Kat rales and dwight dark clark are the other boys out for the tackle spot and will make rupp and swan hustle all the time els n one of these young huskies will be out there SPIRITED BATTLE FOR GUARDS six men are putting up a spir cited battle for the two guard pos irions duane bowman lee brown eldon pugh ralph poulson leon ard and max christen sen all want to be in the center of the line when tooele thoele trots out on the field duane dee do bow man len and ralph poulson have the ins de track at the present writing but even the coach t have any idea who will be the starters last season the center spot was alternated between gordon bunn ana larry stevenson and the same situation will probably be the vogue this year bunn bradu abed and stevenson moved to the backfield so the spot is wide open with D ck st jeor and russell fjeldsted trying to convince put nik that I 1 am the man for the job st jeor is just a shade ahead of fjeldsted at this writing but both boys will undoubtedly earn their letters SIX GAME SCHEDULE due to restrictions on the train ing period tooele thoele will only play six games and out of the six only two games will be on the new field at tooele thoele the first game for the 1948 edition of the buffs buff s is to morrow night sept 10 at park city the following friday tooele thoele will journey to morgan for an arc manager is also a returning letterman having served in that position last yer front row left to right lorry larry stevenson loren dunn glen rupp glen hamilton second row karl swan timmer mcken drick ellis williams charles gillespie chubby photo
